Please, can you recommend me a tool that can boot itself and restore a file. I've erased boot.ini on my laptop and need to recover it as my hdd is internal. What can you propose?

This will work if you have are running XP Pro.
If you have a regular, not a 'restore' XP CD, Set the BIOS to boot CD before Hard Disk. Boot the XP CD and, instead of Setup, take the immediate R for Repair. Assume any password requested is blank, and TAB over.

Give the command
BootCfg /Rebuild
