IE6 not connecting |

hI
I have a laptop with XP SP2. I am trying to connect to the internet via the
built in modem. I can dial up my ISPs servers, and connect, but IE refuses to
surf the internet. All I get is the no connection page, or sometimes an error
message saying IE cannot open the page. If I try pinging the website from a
command prompt, I cannot ping anything, but the loopback address works OK.
The Modem was on COM3, and I have changed this to COM1, but on device manager
no COM ports show up at all!! I have tried setting all IEs defaults back,
and diasbled the firewall, to no effect. The laptop has never been connected
to the internet before. Any ideas anyone??

It sounds like you aren't getting proper DNS resolution. Check with your
ISP for the correct settings.

Please do some additional diagnostics, and provide some detail about your

It is a standard Dial up connection to the ISP servers. I can connect to the
ISP servers, or at least my username and password are being authenticated.
Should I try reinstalling TCP/IP, or try repairing a corrupt winsock? The
laptop has never before been tried to connect to the internet except
yesturday. Can you advise on what additional Info you need. Would a COM port
issue be the problem, even though I have tried the modem diagnostics, but
they appear to be OK.

Chris,
If you read my tutorial on solving problems, you'll know that you do have to
start from the bottom (physical layer) up, and the Com port is the definitive
bottom layer. You will indeed have to get that right before you can do
anything. Wrong Com port = no connection to the modem. It's that simple.
If you get the Com port wrong, Windows should give you an error like "No dial
tone" or "Unable to initialise modem". Make sure the speaker is enabled. When it
starts to dial, what do you hear? It's not easy to describe, but if you do get
a connection, you'll hear 4 things in sequence:
# Dial tone (like on your voice terminal).
# A series of clicks and beeps of miscellaneous nature.
# A screech or a continuous beep.
# Silence.
When the silence starts, then you should get one or more text messages saying
what's happening.
Once you've done the above a few times, you'll get a feel for what each sound
means. It's not easy for me to explain, but if you can listen, and tell me as
best you can what you're seeing or hearing, I may be able to help you diagnose
the problem. Or you can get your ISP to diagnose (they are paid to do that, and
they have access to the equipment at their end, so they can tell what's
happening).

Well its dialing up the ISP,and making all the usual modem noises, it
connects to the ISPs servers, and also autheticates me. After that IE doesnt
want to connect to web pages, and I cannot ping any either. Will follow your
tutorial. I have noticed that there are a few ISP icons on the desktop, but
no corresponding connection in the network settings, AOL is one of them.
Should I uninstall everything I dont need, and start again??

Chris,
If you're getting connected, do the diagnostics listed in the "..#Help" link
above. Let's see exactly what the ping problem is.
Clean everything up after you solve your problems.

I have deleted the Winsock and Winsock2 Reg keys, and reinstalled TCP/IP, to
no avail. I can now ping certain websites with DNS and Ip address, but not
others. IE tells me it cannot open the page. I have installed firefox, and
get told the connection was refused when attempting to connect to
start.mozilla.org. IPCONFIG appears fine, I am receiving an IP address and
can ping the ISPs DNS servers, but IPCONFIG tells the a DHCP server is not
available. I can ping yahoo, and the IP address in your guide, but cannot
connect with the name or IP in IE. I have even reinstalled SP2, to no avail.
I am resining myself to a full reinstall of XP:-( Can you shed any more
light on this. |
