Xp hangs on start-up |

Hi there,
I tried to update my winxp..however when the sytem re-started,it freezed
After the first screen,on the second screen,where it says " Boot record found from ide......Ok ""
after this message the system freezes.
I have tried to boot from Xp cd however,when I try to go to the Repair system,i cant do anything there.I dont get the option where I have to choose what I have to repair.
When I choose set up option,i get to c only one partition c: which shows "abc" of total space and shows the same space as the free space,however I have three partitions on my hard-disk,but on this screen it shows me only C drive
I dont know how to proceed ...i would really appreciate if someone could look into it and help me out.
