Windows XP - Serious Problems! |

Not sure if this is the right topic for this to be under. I downloaded the
SP2
and it came up with a blue screen saying 'physical dump of memory', I missed
the instructions that came up so a computer guy took my machine away and kind
of sorted it - when it starts up 2 'run dll' boxes come up saying 'can't find
system32' or similar. I have tried loading SP2 from the disc from Microsoft
but the same thing happened. Since I had trouble with the update my computer
crashes all the time and is slow and is generally just 'knackered' - does
anyone know if there is a repiar disc or something similar? I'm starting to
lose my patience!!! |

If he screwed it up,then youre best bet would be to,install xp cd,boot to
xp cd,at info screen select install,select, "repair this copy".This way xp
remains
installed however all updates are lost (SP2 included).If you think its all
save-able,
boot to xp cd,select recovery,press enter key for password,then type:
CHKDSK C: /R When its thru 20 mins or so,type:EXIT Let xp restart.

That will only work if the XP disk has SP2 on it. I had to remove SP2
before I could efect a repair.

When the guy took the machine away he said that he'd sorted it out. But it
kept coming up with all these errors and crashing so I got the disc from
Microsoft but when I loaded it I got the same 'dumping memory' message but
this time I managed to follow the instructions on screen so I opened windows
in safe mode then uninstalled SP2. I'm now back to running SP1!

What antivirus software are you using? Is it fully up to date?
What antispyware software are you using? Is it fully up to date?
Have you done complete virus and spyware scans of your computer
lately?
Go to http://housecall.trendmicro.com and do their free online scan.
Choose the full or complete scan option.

Spybot by itself is not sufficient for removing or blocking spyware.
It catches a lot, but not everything and it has some issues with
regard to "false positives".
A good "companion" for Spybot is Ad-Aware (free) from www.lavasoft.com
I actually prefer Ad-Aware to Spybot as a primary or initial scanner,
as it is far less likely to falsely identify good files as spyware.
After removing the stuff that Ad-Aware finds running Spybot will
usually pick up some additional items, and with a much smaller list of
total items found it is easier to check it through to identify
possible mistakes. p.s. if you run Spybot first and Ad-Aware second
then Ad-Aware will also find more items, things that Spybot missed.
The two programs use different methodology for identify the baddies
and that is why the make a good combination.
I also find that the free beta of Microsoft AntiSpyware from
http://download.microsoft.com is a very useful tool for preventing
infestations in the first place.
