XPE SP2 Update from Microsoft Windows Update website |
|
|
I've searched high and low and can not find a definitive answer to this
question.
Can XPE SP2 be updated using the Windows Update website??? I've seen many
different theories to this, but none of them explicitly say that SP2 can't
support updates utilizing the web update agent.
I see Windows Update links within the XPE image. When activated, critical
updates are displayed ready for download. When I try and install the updates
all of them fail in a few seconds with the Error Code: 80246008.
Any ideas or suggestions???
Thanks,

Tom,
You cannot use WU within XPe/SP1 image. It is not supported.
If you switch to SUS solution, you can use WU packages then (not from MS WU server but from your own SUS server).
Although I doubt you would be able to easy install SP updates even with SUS.
(in any case SUS client is in SP2 only)

Hi Tom,
Are you talking about updating an SP2 image with updates from Windows
Update?
If so, the answer is no. Windows Update does not support XP Embedded.
However, you can use SUS (Software Update Services) and create your own
internal Windows Update server that can deliver updates to your XPE devices.
Here's a whitepaper on what SUS is and how it works for XPE.

With SP2, SUS is supported but the Windows Update web site is not supported.
This is because the IT department controlling a SUS within their network has
control over the updates and can ensure that the device doesn't install an
update that is not applicable and doesn't have dependencies that are not on
the system.
Imagine this scenario, someone trying to install the latest IE update from
WU if IE isn't on the system. WU has no way of detecting that this IE update
will put the device in a hosed state.
