Has anyone connected a DVD changer to MCE now that it supports it? Do you
know who makes supported DVD changers? The only one's I've been able to find
are made by Powerfile and are very expensive
(http://www.buy.com/retail/searchresults.asp?qu=firewire+dvd+changer&search_store=1).
This looks like something that I'd like to take advantage of, but not if I
have to spend more for the DVD changer than I spend on my TV.

You would have to check with the manufacturer for your questions. I don't
have one, but was furnishing sources for information. This newsgroup
supports Media Center Edition functionality, not all the available
peripherals. 8-)

MCE is controlling the firewire DVD changer, it looks like that device is

Do those Sony DVD changers interface with the PC? It's not clear from the
descriptions of how they connect and how MCE would interact with them, or
even how they can catalog the DVD's in each slot.

Microsoft was showing MCE with RU2 at DigitalLife in NYC last week connected
to a PowerFile DVD changer using the 1394 interface. We have heard that MCE
RU2 was tested with the new Sony DVD changers, also.

I believe the Sony Changer isn't available on its own - you have to
buy a package that includes the PC.

Some reports say the Niveus Ice Vault 200 will only work with Niveus MCE machines, other say any MCE 2005 with Rollup 2 and a firewire connection.

Quote:

The drive in the DVD changer appears in Windows as a regular DVD drive. So
the content is 'streamed' to the PC. There is no video input switching like
with a traditional DVD changer that might be controlled via RS-232 or IR.

Quote:
MCE is controlling the firewire DVD changer, it looks like that device is
maintaining the catalog, sending that information to MCE, which in turn adds
the other information (say from imdb.org). Then when the user selects a DVD
to play, MCE sends the commands to the DVD changer, which I would expect, to
then send the DVD content back to MCE so MCE can play it.

That's a decent characterization of how it works. However we get our
metadata from AMG.

Yes, the changer with the Sony XL1 interfaces with the PC over 1394. MCE
interacts with the changer using the medium device changer interface.
