I upgraded a computer from Windows 2000 to Windows XP Pro. Having done this
on several other computers in the past, I'm puzzled as to why I cannot run
Windows Messenger on this one. Launching the executable has not effect. I
downloaded a new version of Windows Messenger and it will not install. I get
"Could not open key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVertion\Setup\OC
Manager\Subcomponents. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or
contact your support personnel." I'm logged in as Administrator. I
reinstalled Windows, no change. Any suggestions, please? Thanks.

Greetings,

The registry in Windows XP allows ACLs per each key so I think you may have some serious
issues there.

Regardless, download and run both of these .reg files to see if we can get it working:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/downloads/enablewindowsmessenger_user.reg
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/downloads/enablemessenger.reg

You'll need to reboot to see the change.

Jonathan, you may be right on with the thought that I may have some serious
issues. I ran both .reg files you recommended (and rebooted) with no effect.
Another oddity about this computer is that it will not list anything in the
Event Viewer. In the Application View, there are little windows-type icons
along the left side where you typically see the blue i-icons, etc., and no
information at all. Another piece of the puzzle.

Next, I went to try another computer, which I had also recently upgraded
from Win2K to XP Pro. Its Event Viewer was fine, but it would also not
launch Windows Messenger. I ran the two registry entries on it ... with the
same results. No go. This second computer has not experienced any other
problems and both computers in question seem to run all other applications
with no hassles. What should I try next? Thank you! Teija
