Synaptics Touchpad causing XP mayhem. |

Hello,
I have an Acer Travelmate 4050. A few days ago I made a system recover
due to some (unrelated) problems with my internet connection. A few day
later I turn on my computer and to my surprise I am unable to navigat
with the touchpad mouse. I connect an USB mouse to the computer, onl
to find out, that the keyboard isn't functioning either.
I enter XP and Device Manager. Here I can see an exclamation point i
front of my "synaptics touchpad" driver. I "remove" this from the list
and hope it will reinstall upon a restart.
I restart the computer, but the touchpad doesn't work. The keyboar
however is working again. The touchpad doesn't reinstall by it self
and when I try to add hardware, it doesn't find any missing hardware.
I search Acers site, and find a driver for the touchpad. I install thi
and reboot. Wohooo!
My touchpad now works again...for a few minuts. A rerun this process
few times, and the touchpad works for a few minuts upon a reinstall o
the driver. Sometimes it has some trouble with the left-click button
It usually stops working a few minuts into the windows session when
try to close a window.
I figure something went wrong during the system recovery and decide t
do another one.
Here I sit 4-5 system recoveries later. During a few of the syste
recoveries my keyboard didn't work, causing me to start over. I hav
tried using to different language system recovery discs, thereb
eliminating the software as the problem (only the bootable syste
recovery disc is used during all recoveries).
The system recoveries all seem to hang at some point (upon one of th
automatic reboots where the XP logo is being shown, and a blu
indicator shows the "loading" of windows. One time I left it for hour
and it still showed the blue indicator crossing the screen, I force th
computer to shut down, and it starts up normally (without the touchpa
installed however).
I am now able to enter windows with my USB mouse, and the keyboar
seems to be working (I am typing from it anyway :-) ). Whenever I tr
to install the touchpad and reboot I cannot get passed the abov
mentioned "XP screen". I have to force the computer to shut down, whic
seemingly prevents the touchpad from being installed.
I seems like windows hangs during the "loading" process, whenever th
touchpad is installed. If I shut down the computer I have to wait
20-30 seconds before restarting, otherwise the computer doesn't ge
passed the "bios" screen??? (also a "feature" my computer picked up th
last few days).
I am not a computer noob, but do not know a lot of what goes on "belo
the hood", and this problem doesn't seem logic to me:
* I know the touchpad is capable of working.
* Sometimes my keyboard doesn't work (when the touchpad driver is show
from device manager)
* windows almost always hangs during reboot if the touchpad i
installed
* In the beginning the touchpad would work for a few minuts, now
cannot reboot the computer if the touchpad is installed.
* The system has been completely recovered which should leave out an
software/virus/adware/spyware problems (?).
I am running out of options of what to do.
I am completely dependent on my labtop (running on the last few month
of my university years), and although I have a guarentee, I couldn't d
without my computer for the weeks an (attempted) repair would last. O
top of this I now the touchpad is capable of working, and I woul
probably get the computer back with a message of it being a softwar
problem.
If you made it to the bottom of this post - congratulations! :-)...
really hope someone out there have a clue of what to do now OR where t
seek help.
(My only theory know is a hunch about it being a harddisc proble
(although no tests show this) and the mouse driver is on a "ba
cluster" or something. Is this far fetched?, if it isn't how could
confirm this?)

Sorry that I do not know how to fix the problem with "synaptics
touchpad", I suggest that y'all contact Acer for guidance.
I, too, have had problems with the touchpad on my Averatec - though
not the same as y'alls, mine are generally cockpit problems with the
various features vs. my short stubby fingers touching the pad when I
don't want to!
My solution was to purchase an inexpensive small optical mouse, with a
'roll up' usb cord model HTM-37YT (can't find the mfgr's name on it).
Purchased at either Office Max or Office Depot, in store.

I doubt that there is an "expert answer" for your particular situation,
seeing as it does not follow a very consistent, repeatable pattern.
Also, the fact that you have a problem immediately after a RESTORE (if
I understood correctly) would tend to eliminate software as being the
problem area.
My guess (and that's all it is) is that you have a hardware-related
issue that pops up after some component reaches a certain temperature.
You can try to confirm this by shutting down completely for enough time
to let the machine cool down a bit. Then let's restart and see if your
touchpad works for any amount of time before it dies or kills your
machine. Of course, should my guess be correct, it would not
necessarily mean that the problem is with the pad itself. It could be
some wiring problem, for example.

Thanks for your input.
I guess I have to get it checked out by the store :-(.
I have also noticed a problem in a game I play (supreme ruler 2010)
When I leave the game the computer sometimes crashes (depending o
when I save the game etc.). This is also a new problem, since I used t
play this game without any trouble before

Not sure how you have gone, would be really interested to hear though.
Have had the same problem myself, started with a problem at bootu
(travelmate 4050), with XP prompting a consistency check on the hdd.
From here, a dead touchpad.
XP has not been able to find the touchpad, thus attempts to reinstal
driver have been futile. I too have been getting problems with th
keyboard, particularly in the shared numberpad key area.
Either way would be interested to hear whether you resolved and how
