ms digital image suit totally ties up computer for long time |

My software is Microsoft's Digital Image Suite and Library, Version 10,
runing on Intel Pentium IV, 1.7 GHz machine with WinXP-SR2. My machine
has a 40 GByte HDD C:/ drive and an 80 GByte HDD F:/ drive for backup.
Norton Ghost stores a backup copy of C:/ drive on the F:/ drive.
Recently, Everytime I open Microsoft's Digital Image Library, my CPU
usage goes to 100%, and Windows Task Manager indicates "Digital Image
Library" is not responding. However, eventually the program does load
up.
At first I thought it might be because the library monopolizing my
machine to compile an index of all the pictures, but the same problem
occurs even after I have left the program run for several hours.
Assuming the program files might somehow been damaged, I then tried
removing and reloading the program; there was no change. The program did
work when I first loaded it back in Jan. '05, which was before I
installed and second HDD and Norton Ghost. I can't say that Norton
Ghost is the problem, but I suspect an interaction problem.
The "Digital Image Library" appears to have indexed all of the photos on
the back-up F:\ drive and very few of the photos on the main C:\ drive.
Also, everytime I seek to make a change in what is shown by the Digital
Image Library program, the machine is monopolized by the program for one
or two minutes until it finishes whatever it is trying to do.
QUESTION .. How do I get "Digital Image Library" to ignore images on my
backup F:\ drive? I tried the Add pictures to library icon, but program
seems to ignore request to delete indexing F:\ drive. I suspect that
the slow operation is a result of having to uncompress the files stored
on that drive by Norton Ghost.

Try adding piorg.db to the NAV Auto
Exclusion List.
Also...if you happen to have Adobe PhotoShop
or Elements installed...right click on a .jpg file
and choose Properties. Click the Photoshop
Image tab and uncheck the "Generate Thumbnails"
button, then click OK.

Sounds lie a resource issue. Closing all
programs before opening DIS...expecially
virus scanners may help. Also, running
Disk Cleanup, Error Checking and Defrag
on a regular schedule could help also.

After much of a hunt, I found how to add "piorg.db" to the NAV exclusion
list. It did not help.
When I right click on .jpg files, there is no Photoshop "Generate
Thumbnails" button. There is the option to open file with Photoshop 3.0.
No matter how many times I tell Digital Image Library to ignore the
files on my F:/ drive, it keeps seeking to index the multitude of files
on my backup F:\ drive every time I open up the application. I note also
that while it is busy starting up (and possibly indexing the F:\ drive),
it is not even listed as an application that is running. Thus, I can't
terminate the application. I must wait the five or ten minutes until it
finishes what it is doing before I can again use my machine.
I have noted that the problem I have encountered is also discussed at

by John Inzer under the topic Digital Image Library 10 Won't Start. In
that post, a whole host of suggestions are presented that are
incompatible with the way I use my machine. For example, I'm not
disabling Norton AntiVirus just so I can use Microsoft's Digital Image
Library, even though I paid good money for it.
As for now, Digital Image Library is useless to me until Microsoft comes
in with a fix that makes Digital Image Library compatible with other
programs. |

Some time back this issue concerned the floppy drive, no matter what the poster tried
in their application, the floppy drive was accessed. The solution was to clear the
most recent documents cache. Can't say this will help, but it is worth a try.

If you have XP-Home Edition you should have no real problem w/Compressing and
Un-Compressing Files..BUT..XP-Professional would add to your
Problems..JPEG-files are a Compressed File..you do not need to COMPRESS
them..<<<Hope I correct on this one>>>so make sure your JPEG Folders are NOT
COMPRESSED Folders that UN-Compress when OPENED..some File Types are
Compressed types already..thet do not go into a COMPRESSED FOLDER..<<<try
that>>>this is my first PC---so be careful what I tell you..but I'm fairly
sure of this one..CHECK MicroSoft for Compressed Folder--->use what
Extensions files......?????

I've check to see if Norton Go Back was loaded on my machine. I do have
Norton System Works 2004 & Norton Ghost. I could not find GO BACK and so
possibility of conflict with GO BACK has tentatively been ruled out.
I sought to clear the Document cache. using "disk cleanup," but it did
not clear the recent documents cache. They are still listed when I go to
Start / Documents. I've not yet figured out how to clear that list.
I found the Microsoft Support Page for Digital Image Suite and I've sent
them an e-mail request for help. I also pointed them to this news group.
Today, when I again tried to open the Digital Image Library, the machine
took several minutes to open, it seems to again insist on indexing the

This POST is confuseing me..from my Novice Reading..NORTON is a Security
Suite Software Company..so..in DiskClean will be labled a WEB-Client..You can
NOT DELETE the WEB-Client Files..Floppy's are "A" Drives..and a "F" Drive is
a External Drive..but then(??)..this is all set into a better ITEM if you use
the ComputerManagement DEVICE Manager to RE-Name your DRIVES(I use the
Mfg.1st Letter to Name EXT.Drives)example....S=SONY....M=MAXTOR...W=Western
Digital....My "F" Drive is labled...DAZZLE.....so there is no confusion when
I Sign-Off..I always use a DEVICE REMOVAL when Shutting Down or Signing
OFF..other than that this THREAD was about problems that I percieved as the
COMPRESSSING and De-COMPRESSING of Files when Createing a COMPRESSED
Folder(when NOT Needed)....jpg.....does NOT need a Compressed folder(only in

Since my last post, a Microsoft Tech has been corresponding with me |
regarding this problem. He/she asked me if the problem was still
present when I ran the machine with the OS in SafeMode; when I ran the
machine with Norton AntiVirus Disable; and after I had used "disk
clean-up." My answer was that no matter what I've done, it still takes
five or more minutes to load Digital Image Library, and I have not found
a way to prevent the program from indexing my Norton Ghost Back-Up files
on my second internal hard drive, my F:\ drive.
If I find a solution, I'll post it. |

I use a PC at home..XP-Pro..if my machine is running slow it is because the
PC is performing some operation..as in writing LOGS or Loading Programs..I'm
not on a NetWork..There are Folders that might need to be Deleted that don't
show up in Disk Clean..and only can be found with a Re-Install of a
Program..you must remember this ITEM..or just constantly perform a Re-Install
of Software Programs..the XP-Logo should be your GUIDE..then there is
Hardware failure..if your Hardware is old it might be operateing poorly
because of Power requirements..
For AC-power from the wall I would always use a Surge Protector..and NOT for
the AC/DC Converter(plug directly into the wall-outlet)..every once in a
while I UN-Plug all of my Electical Devices..that seems to create an
improvement in my Devices useing an AC/DC Converter..other than that I have
found to NOT Move your FOLDERS around your EXT.Devices-eliminates lot's of
Program mal-functions at OPENING the Program..the Device manager is the best
for PC Operateing..some Drivers will need Re-installing after lots of
Projects..or a mal-function..my business software is very "touchy"..my Media

Norton System Works 2004 & Norton Ghost. I could not find GO BACK and so
possibility of conflict with GO BACK has tentatively been ruled out.
I sought to clear the Document cache. using "disk cleanup," but it did
not clear the recent documents cache. They are still listed when I go to
Start / Documents. I've not yet figured out how to clear that list.
I found the Microsoft Support Page for Digital Image Suite and I've sent
them an e-mail request for help. I also pointed them to this news group.
Today, when I again tried to open the Digital Image Library, the machine
took several minutes to open, it seems to again insist on indexing the
F:\ drive, and it ignored lots of directories with images on the C:\ drive.
I'll come back to this issue as time permits, but basically I've
switched to Picasa for indexing photographs.
Since my last post, a Microsoft Tech has been corresponding with me
regarding this problem. He/she asked me if the problem was still
present when I ran the machine with the OS in SafeMode; when I ran the
machine with Norton AntiVirus Disable; and after I had used "disk
clean-up." My answer was that no matter what I've done, it still takes
five or more minutes to load Digital Image Library, and I have not found
a way to prevent the program from indexing my Norton Ghost Back-Up files
on my second internal hard drive, my F:\ drive.
If I find a solution, I'll post it.
Microsoft Customer Support Services solved the problem. It turns out |
that the uninstalling the Digital Image program did not remove or clear
the image data base. The default location for the image data base is:
C:\Documents and Settings\Michael\Application Data\Microsoft\POD
After removing the three Picture.*** files in that directory, the
program opened quickly and recreated the previously deleted files using
only those directories that I specified. THE PROGRAM IS WORKING!!!
Obviously I did not call for the program to index the files on my
physically separate backup F:\ drive. I believe the program was running
very slow because the machine had to decompress each Norton Ghost backup
file on the F:\ drive before the Digital Image Library could ascertain
its contents.
I'm uncertain as to how the Digital Image Library data base acquired
errors. I do know that I had two "virus" incidents requiring various GO
BACK techniques between when the program was first loaded on my machine
and the time when problems were encountered.
