I wanted to share my personal experience with a MCE PC set-up to work with an
extender.
When I ordered this MCX I did not know anything about its limitations. I
started to browse the internet, found this newsgroup board and then started
to read and uncover all the limitations related to MCX as posted by some
users: connection problems, no DVD support, acts just like a TIVO box, ....
I immediately called HP to cancel my MCX order...was too late. But the
customer representative told me that I could use the "return if not satisfied
within 30 days" policy.
I installed it, started to use it and within a week, all my family (I have a
8y and 10y old boys) was completely addicted to it. My kids use it a lot to
proactively schedule TV recordings, I even suprised them browsing our family
pictures comfortably seated in the leaving room. This never happened when I
had only My PC set-up. But the more important is that we can still use the
MCE PC while other persons are using the Extender. We even try to watch a DVD
on the MCE or watch live TV while my kids were watching a recorded movie on
the extender: NO ISSUE at all. I have no issue with the wireless connection
either. In 10/15 seconds the extender is up and running. I used to spend a
lot of time burning dvds to watch movies in my living room. This time is
over. When I take pictures or receive pictures from my family, there are
immediately available for watching in my living room with no hassle. Of
course, as stated by some users, there are still some limitations, like
streaming DVD is not supported because of copyright laws. But for me it's not
that important: I have a DVD player seating close to the MCX and I don't have
plan to store all my dvds on a Hard Drive media so far. But I understand that
other users might find this a showstopper(mainly for the folks that have
already a TIVO and don't see value added). Of course I expect a lot of
improvements to come, like making easier the configuration/addition of
applications hosted by MCX, etc...this will come at times, I am sure. Bottom
line, the MCX really enhanced my digital entertainment experienced . For
people who are interested with my setup: MCE HP 1050y, (1gb RAM, 250gb
disc,3.4ghz p4), HP extender X5400, netgear WGU624).

Typically in a newsgroup like this, you mostly
just read about problems and complaints. It's
good to read about a positive experience such
as yours. Thanks for sharing it with us! :-)

Thanks for sharing your experience. It is pretty awesome to be "connected"
in such a manner.
