Can't play Live TV or recorded programs on Extender w/ Rollu |
|
|
I have recently gotten an extender (linksys) and was having problems when
attempting to watch Live TV or a recorded program on the extender. In an
effort to troubleshoot I ended up reloading the OS and starting from scratch.
The only thing currently on my machine is the OS, drivers for my hardware,
and the extender applictions.
In an effort to pinpoint what was going on I installed things and tested as
I went.
When I first loaded up the OS I updated all drivers for my hardware. I then
installed the extender apps from Linksys directly from the disk that came
with the extender. I then tested Live TV, which seemed to work fine.
I then installed MCE Rollup 1 which was required by the Linksys Extender
update (downloaded from the MS website). Then when I attempted Live TV or
watching a recorded show over the extender I recieved an error on the Desktop
MCE machine stating that mhn.dll caused a fault in a svchost.exe instance.
Once this has occured I have to reboot both the extender AND the MCE desktop
to get them to reconnect.
This is the same error I was getting prior to re-installing so I assume the
rollup had something to do with it. I went ahead and installed the linksys
update just to be sure, but it was still giving me the error.
Info on my system:
I have a home built MCE, not one put together by a vendor. It's running MCE
2005 (xp sp2) on a AMD Athalon 1800+ CPU, with a Gig of RAM.
I'm using a wired connection for the extender. Both the PC and the extender
are plugged (wired) into a linksys switch, which is also what connects me to
the ADSL modem and the internet.
I can listen to My Music and watch My Pictures over the extender with no
problem. I'm using the trial (supposedly fully functional) Nvidia DVD
Decoder for my decoder, and I'm wondering if that may be the issue. I'm just
"trying" MCE out to see if I want to do some development for it.
Error information:
When attempting to run LiveTV or watch a recorded program on the extender
(works fine on the desktop!) I get the following:
On the desktop an instance of svcHost.exe dies.
The information it provides is:
szAppName : svchost.exe szAppVer : 5.1.2600.2180 szModName : mhn.dll
szModVer : 5.1.2600.2180 offset : 000080db
The Extender states it can't connect to the desktop. If you click okay it
then attempts to reconnect. Once it dies, it won't reconnect. The message
on the extender just keeps saying "There is a Problem with the Microsoft
Product Activation on the Medi Center PC".
In the event log I get the following:
System Log:
Error TermService 6:49:21 PM : Remote Media Center session was logged off
because system validation failed.
Error Service Control Manager 6:49:35 PM : The Service Control Manager tried
to take a corrective action (Restart the service) after the unexpected
termination of the Windows Management Instrumentation service, but this
action failed with the following error:

in Source ( Media Center Scheduler ) cannot be found. (When looking at the
error I see it is a .Net exception talking about RPCServer unavailable.
Nothing in the MediaCenter Log or the Security Log.
I have spent about three days and two re-installs trying to figure out what
the problem is. Anyone have any ideas?
I don't know enough about how the extender is getting at the services to
know if this could be the issue, but could it be related to the DVD decoder
and the fact that another user (the extender) is attempting to use the
decoder to watch Live TV? Is the decoder used at all when playing back
dvr-ms files? |

Did you activate the installation of the new install with MS at the end of
the install?
If your XP firewall is on try with it turned off.
Try running My music on the extender and switching to My TV.
If you have antivirus software installed you might also try with it turned
off.
The extender has its own decoder so the NVIDIA DVD decoder on the MCE system
is not part of your problem

Yes, XP MCE was activated at the end of the install. The MCE installation
modified the XP firewall to have the correct ports opened that were required.
Unless he rollup for MCE affected the firewall settings, which I didn't see
that it did, then it shouldn't have stopped working after that. I'll try
with the firewall off anyay. I currently have no virus software installed as
I was attempting to do a fresh install and get to the bottom of the problem.
I have tried running My Music and then switching to TV....I get the error
mentioned no matter how I have attempted to get to the TV feature. Thanks
for the info on the decoder.

The extender has its own decoder so the NVIDIA DVD decoder on the MCE system
is not part of your problem |
