I can burn shorter video dvds from recorded shows, but when I try to burn a
show longer than an hour, I get the "error occurred while creating DVD'
message. I have all the latest updates installed. My computer, an hp1270n,
has no trouble burning dvds using winDVD creator. Any suggestions?

hmm, I tried to play it on my Bose and another Samsung player. No go.
Right from Media Center I chose "Create CD/DVD" no converting, right?
did not work for me. Of course it plays on my pc, where I already had it!
lol.

Sounds like you may not have the SonicEncoders installed. If you did, you'd
have the option of creating a Data DVD, a Video DVD, or a DVD slideshow. The
Data CD is what it defaults to if you don't have the Sonic Encoders,
otherwise you're shown all 3 choices.

Most OEMs include the Sonic Encoders with their distribution, but most
build-it-yourself systems don't, as it's not included on that CD.

Sadly, Sonic doesn't sell it direct to the public.

I own Sonic, but don't have it installed. Is that all I'd have to do, install
it? Gosh, so many codecs and variables. I already have WinDVD simply to use
my tuner.
If anyone feels brave enough to help with my post about "being deppressed"
I WELCOME it.

There's a known issue (and Microsoft Knowledge Base article about it) where
the user is trying to burn a recorded PAL TV show. Doesn't apply to the US
as we use NTSC. Other issues I've heard may be caused by media and may be
solved by changing brands of blank DVDs and/or changing from - or + to the
other one. Not sure that solves everything, but might solve some of the
users. I hear the new Rollup 2 available soon may solve other burner
problems.

I don't know about Dual Layer - the last time I tried to burn 2 hours to a
dual layer drive, it wouldn't fit (approx 4Gb) but I haven't tried since
Rollup 2 was installed (it's been a busy week). Have you installed the
update to Rollup 2?

Hi Dana;

Have any guidence for my DVD burning issue?. I don't get any error message
at all. It simply hangs at 3% progress when I try and burn a recorded tv
program (a 1 hr. show to a 2x DVD-RW in this case).

Well, rollup 2 supposedly fixed some burning issues. I've heard of other
issues that may be drive-dependent, and I think at least one was fixed in
the update that came out _after_ rollup 2 (both are optional updates, not
critical, so you'll need to use Windows Update and look for them). Let me
know which burner you have and I'll pass that on. Otherwise, I've heard of
simple solutions such as using another brand of media, or using DVD-R
instead of DVD+R or vice versa.

Thanks for the prompt reply Dana;

The particular burner supplied with this unit is the one installed by Dell
with the system purchase. An NEC 16x burner ND-3530A reviewed here at
http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Reviews/Specific.aspx?ArticleId=13809

I have tried so far just two re-writable formats I had on hand originally
bought for my standalone DVD recorder, DVD-RW 2X, and DVD+RW 4X, not wanting
to waste good blank DVD-Rs, +Rs (4X and 8X respectivley) just for testing
purposes. But I may have to I realize. I not sure if the problem is with the
drive or media as it seems that the MC can't get through the transcoding
part. It simply hangs at the 3% mark. Have tried the up-grade at
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=327035e8-5494-4a26-ba8a-24c1296d70bb&DisplayLang=en
.. Same results. Still hangs at the 3% point. No error message or anything.

I can of course burn pre-recorded (DVR-MS) TV prorgams to DVDs just fine
with My Nero burning software. However it is one of those things again about
me personally that not being one that anyone would ever mistake as being a
rich man. When you pay $3000.00+ for a Home MC PC you expect something like
this central feature to function.

P.S.>> Tried formating the DVD+-RWs first with the sonic DLA software that
is installed on this PC by Dell to see if this would help as this feature in
the MCE is listed as powered by Sonic software. The MC won't even take the
disc now when I do that as it rejects it saying that the "MC cannot write to
this disc. Please insert a writable disc into drive". Go figure.

Hi Dana;

Have any guidence for my DVD burning issue?. I don't get any error message
at all. It simply hangs at 3% progress when I try and burn a recorded tv
program (a 1 hr. show to a 2x DVD-RW in this case).

I don't know about Dual Layer - the last time I tried to burn 2 hours to
a
dual layer drive, it wouldn't fit (approx 4Gb) but I haven't tried since
Rollup 2 was installed (it's been a busy week). Have you installed the
update to Rollup 2?

Hi Dana

What is the KB article number? as i have a similar issue (I have
installed
the Sonic Encoders but the Create Video DVD always fails at 1%) (note
that
i
have the Rollup2 Installed)

Do i need any software in addition to the Sonic Encoders and as a Dual
Layer
DVD Recorder supported?

Many Thanks

George

There's a known issue (and Microsoft Knowledge Base article about it)
where
the user is trying to burn a recorded PAL TV show. Doesn't apply to
the
US
as we use NTSC. Other issues I've heard may be caused by media and may
be
solved by changing brands of blank DVDs and/or changing from - or + to
the
other one. Not sure that solves everything, but might solve some of
the
users. I hear the new Rollup 2 available soon may solve other burner
problems.

Hi Dana Cline, My Media Center have the option of creating a Data
DVD,
Video
DVD and a DVD Slide Show. Why do you think the disc creation of a
recorded
tv
show within my MCE progarm still freeze at 3%! Any idea? Thanks in
advance!

Sounds like you may not have the SonicEncoders installed. If you
did,
you'd
have the option of creating a Data DVD, a Video DVD, or a DVD
slideshow.
The
Data CD is what it defaults to if you don't have the Sonic
Encoders,
otherwise you're shown all 3 choices.

Most OEMs include the Sonic Encoders with their distribution, but
most
build-it-yourself systems don't, as it's not included on that CD.

Sadly, Sonic doesn't sell it direct to the public.

hmm, I tried to play it on my Bose and another Samsung player.
No
go.
Right from Media Center I chose "Create CD/DVD" no converting,
right?
did not work for me. Of course it plays on my pc, where I
already
had
it!
lol.

suggestions?
