Is Intel GMA900 supported by Windows XP MCE 2004 / 2005? |
|
|
Hi,
I'm building a HTPC with Shuttle's barebone XPC SB81P, which is using Intel
915G chipset. I'm wondering if its graphic interface (GMA900) supported by
MCE 2005?
Here's the list of the hardware I planned to use:
Shuttle XPC SB81P (Intel 915G chipset)
Pentium 4 LGA775 3.0GHz
1GB DDR RAM
200GB SATA HDD
Leadtek PVR2000 (TV capture card)
A 42" plasma display
A 7.1 speaker system
Is there anything else I need to build a system capable to run Windows XP
MCE 2005?
This is the first time I'm building a HTPC, any idea will help a lot! Thanks! |

Hi,
I checked the list you provided and there's no Leadtek PVR2000 on the list
indeed. But some of my friends used that card on MCE 2005 and it works fine.
Is it possible that MS didn't update the list? (Because I think PVR2000 has
just been released for about a month?)
And about the onboard graphic:
If I didn't plan to play any 3D game on the HTPC, but only want to watch /
record cable TV (I think the TV capture card take care of this right?) and
watch DVD, is it still not powerful enough? Or should I get a PCI-E graphic
card like GeForce 6600?
Thanks for your idea :)

That TV capture card is not supported & the on-board graphics are not powerful
enough. Here is a list of supported hardware & DVD/MPEG2 decoder.

Nigel,
I read a post yesterday in the AVS-Forum HTPC sub forum from a MCE2005
user who had been able to get his motherboard's onboard video to work by
allocating 64MB of memory to it and by disabling its use of overlays. He did
not say what chip was used on the motherboard, however.

It's quite possible the list isn't up to date. It's also not totally
comprehensive as there are certainly graphics cards that work OK that are not on
that list. Just get Leadtek to confirm that it works.

It's not the 3D games it's the MCE interface & display itself that needs a
reasonably powerful graphic card. Why not see whether the on-board graphics will
suffice & if it doesn't work please don't bang your head against the wall trying
to make it work but just buy a decent graphics card. You don't need a GeForce
6600 as an FX5200 will suffice. I use an MX460 which works fine on the monitor
but the menus judder on TV-out. However I now don't use the TV-out as I use an
Xbox Extender which gives a far better picture than any regular graphics card
TV-out. Of course if you have a high definition plasma or LCD that takes a VGA
or DVI input then that is s different story.

The ATI Radeon 9100IGP onboard graphics is stated by ATI to be supported by MCE.
64MB of memory _is_ a minimum requirement for any graphics card under MCE 2005.

It turns out that the Motherboard has a "NVIDIA NForce 2 chipset which
supports GeForce 4 Graphics"
Hopefully on the next MediaCenter conference session someone will ask when
they will start keeping the compatibility list up to date.

Thanks for the info.
Actually I did call Intel yesterday to ask this question. But the answer I
got from their representative was "915G only supports Windows XP HE and
Professional, we don't know if it supports Windows XP MCE."
Also thanks Nigel Barker, I think I'll try your idea. Build the PC, run MCE
with onboard graphic and see how it works. By the way, what's the "slowest"
PCI-E graphic card that supports DVI?
