I have a friend looking to purchase a 2005 MCE computer. She's not quite up to getting one custom made, and would like to know "what brand to buy". I cannot bring myself to recommend Gateways anymore (and will not purchase another one myself ever again), and have heard that Dell is moving away from being a reputable brand as well (just gossip or true, I'm not sure). I haven't seen discussion lately about brands, and would like to start one back up. Not brand-bashing by any sense, just helpful discussion. I am specifically looking for info on customer satisfaction from a straight-out-of-the-box-working-properly-2005-MCE-system, both with the system itself and with customer support. Also, in the realm of monitors, is there any consensus on plasma monitors? Do they work well, are there any issues with getting one hooked up and running? Is there icon burn-in or other known complications?

Thanks in advance for any advice. Looking forward to hearing from y'all.

I have a gateway media center pc, brand new as of a week ago, i get maybe
two channels, traffic, and the cultural arts showcase. Gateway is no help,
i've talked to all of their different levels of support. IM, EMAIL, and
Phone, but they just blame microsoft for it not working.

ps i have heard some people using HP's and although hp's dont have good
customer service in the normal pc biz, they seem to be doing fine in the MCE

I will say from personal shopping around and in-store demos (Best Buy,
Circuit City, CompUSA)

Go with an HP!

I purchased my HP, and just as you said, it worked perfectly the first time,
right out of the box. HP Media center's also have an 8-in-1 built-in media
card reader. Also, HP computers give you more audio/video input and output
options than any other brand. Last but not least, if you do your research,
when Windows XP Media Center was first released, Microsoft initially licensed
it only to HP. So, HP has been in the Media Center from the beginning, thus,
they're far ahead of the game. And support is wonderful with HP (though you
probably won't need any). 24/7 via phone, e-mail, or live chat.
