I don't think you can install MCE on top of XP. You have to fresh install
it, which means you will wipe out all of your games. You can try to save the
game save files somewhere first though. After you have installed MCE, you
can reinstall all your games and put the game saves back.
MCE is basically the same as XP Pro in terms of third party software
compatability.

I have XP pro installed. So the MCE install would wipe my XP pro and then I
would have to reinstall everything. I think I prefer to just add a tv card to
my PC since I can listen to music already and do my own cds and dvds....
I still do not understand what is so "good" about MCE.

You can start here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/mediacenter/default.mspx If you already
have Windows XP Pro, it is the same operating system, but with Media Center
Edition capabilities on top. Of course, it also requires certain hardware
as you'll note by reading through this newsgroup and the information at the
URL above.

You could have missed the point of MCE then! Microsoft could [and should]
sell the MCE components as a separate package but then they'd have lost
"control" over what the base platform was. Originally it was an OEM only
deal so you couldn't event purchase/configure MCE as an end user but this
recently been relaxed. What you get with MCE is a very well put together set
of tools for management of media. It may not do everything that other tools
do but on the whole it's probably to the most polished offering available to
date. I settled on building an MCE system for my kids as most other
applications were found to be quite difficult for young people to use. MCE
is pitched exactly right - it's a simpler than a VCR (given that the Guide
is used for programming).
