Picking up a new laptop with XP MCE on it...but I also want to do audio
production (barebones as possible is best for recording performance) so what
I'm planning on doing is taking the laptop with MCE and creating a partition
on the disc and installing XP Home as the other OS...this way I have my
barebones setup for recording, and my MCE for the fun/business stuff. Will
this create any problems/is this even possible?

It should create no problems - I have Win98Se on C, WinXP SP1 on D, XP MCE
on drive E

Hi,

I don't think you'd have any problems doing what you suggest. However, a
possibly better way is to just have the media center operating system and
turn off the unneeded services when you want bare bones setup.

The benefit of this approach is that there is a management cost of having
two operating systems. You may need two anti-virus system, two driver
updates when they occur, two anti-spyware programs, etc, etc. So with a
little bit of work about how to turn services off, and what services to turn
off, I think you'd have a robust system, which you could easily set for bare
bones work.

The best spot I know of to learn about this approach would be
http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm. This is not specific for
Media Center, but the principles apply.

I know this might appear daunting at first, but in a nutshell, all XP's are
alike, the big difference is in the services that they run. So to go bare
bones, just configure it so for what Black Viper suggests is a safe
configuration. The big difference between home and MC is that the ehome
service is automatically turned on. Just turn it off in the manner he
suggests for other unnecessary services and you'll have a great system, one
you don't have to reboot back and forth to get what you want.

Good luck with either approach you take :)
