SACD capability |
|
|
HI
Is it possible to play a SACD on the MCE? Or even in general, can you play
SACD on a computer CD drive? As I understand it, the laser mecahnisms on a
SACD player and CD player are idential, but the processing and conversions is
handled differently. SO, it may not bne possible. I have never found a CD/DVD
drive that mentions whether this is possible. Seems however it would be a
great idea.
That aside, because the MCE has analog outputs, I thought that you will be
able to enjoy SACD playback on the MCE. Does anyone know the answer?

Joe,
Not unless you use a SACD capable drive. SACD and regular CD are NOT
compatible. You can usually play SACD discs on normal CD players, because
the SACD's on the market usually have an additional, deeper CD layer. The CD
drive just doesn't see the SACD data. Also, the lasers aren't equal. SACD
and CD use different depths and different wavelengths. That aside, you are
correct that processing and conversion is done completely different. CD
normally has a 16 bit AD/DA converter, SACD has a 1 bit AD/DA converter.
CD's normally use 44.1-48 kHz, SACD has 2.8 MHz as sampling rates. They are
incompatible in just about every way imaginable. Anyway, as far as I know,
only Philips, Sony and JVC are on the SACD bandwagon and again AFAIK they
don't have SACD capable CD drives for PC's (probably because you'd need an
additional decoder board with it, there just is no market for high-fidelity
sound incorporated into those noisy static inducing PC's :)).
Hope this helps,
Wolfgang
