How to change MCE2005 to use PAL throughout? |
|
|
Hi
I think that despite all settings pointing to UK (PAL) my Media Center
still utilises NTSC for encoding. This results in lots of aartefacts
in the video. Is there a way to check and force use of PAL?
Thanks |

If your region is set to UK then it will capture in PAL. There is no way within
MCE to convert the signal to NTSC.
What TV capture card do you have?

Though it is possible that the TV Out on a PC has been configured for NTSC
output, which would then provide a poor quality conversion?

Could well be the video card config that is the issue?

If you are getting a colour picture when capturing UK broadcasts then it
must be capturing and recording PAL as "PAL" MPEG2 (i.e. 576/50i)
HOWEVER - are you saying that your TV is delivering an NTSC quality
picture - i.e. 480/60i? Are you seeing jerky motion - or just poor quality
colour and black levels that aren't black? Are you watching through a TV
Out composite or S-video feed?
Most PC TV Outs, even when set-up for PAL composite or S-video output,
aren't great. It is important to check that your TV Output card is
configured to output PAL not NTSC (most have a TV out config tool hidden
away somewhere).
Also some cards let you run the main VGA screen refresh rate at a different
frame rate to the TV output refresh rate (Many PC monitors don't look good -
in fact many can't cope with - 50Hz refresh) This means the PAL 50Hz TV Out
is a conversion from a 60/70/72/75/80Hz etc. frame rate PC display - again
causing potential motion rendition issues. From memory NVidia work this
way, whereas ATI force the main VGA and TV Outs to the same frequency?
I used both NVidia and ATI cards for TV-out feeds to my 16:9 TV and even
when correctly configured for PAL output the s-video and composite feeds
were both pretty poor. They were OK for driving the PC, but when watching
video the quality was really low. The video was underscanned (with black
bars appearing around it), with very poor motion rendition, nasty black
levels, and it looked very soft indeed.
Moving to an ATI video card connected to my TV via a VGA RGB to SCART RGB
cable and Powerstrip software to create a 1024x576/50i mode has improved
things no end. The quality is now much closer to that of a regular TV set
top box or a DVD player.

The problem is that all TV recordings are recorded in 30fps (NTSC I
suppose?). All playback goes through S-Video jack and it is going
through in color without any jerky movements - PAL I suppose.
I use WinTV PVR 150 MCE tuner. Video capture goes through Composite
video (S-Video produces B/W picture).

Dmitriy,
I have a WinTV MCE 150 but it does not seem to pick up the TV signal from my
antenna (coax cable) input on the card. I installed the latest (11th Nov)
drivers from Hauppauge, but the picture does not show in WinTV 2000 or in
MCE2005.
Would you mind telling me what drivers you are using for the WinTV 150 card?
Thanks,
Mark.

I use the latest (only one available) on UK site for WinTV PVR 150 MCE
(not just WinTV PVR 150).
