I just purchased a Dell 8400 which came with Windows Media Edition 2005. I
ordered the E-Home Wonder Card but after numerous delays, it shipped with an
Emuzed Angel duel tuner instead (I don’t know if I am better or worse with
this card). I can record and capture in the Windows Media center and also
Windows Movie Maker. My problem is that I can’t capture anywhere else. The
computer came with Sonic RecordNow and I downloaded a trial version of
ArcSoft ShowBiz DVD2. I am unable to capture in either program. When I
attempt to, I get the following error: “Cannot connect to the selected video
device. Make sure that it is connected properly and that no other capture
applications are running.” I assume that Windows Media is holding the card
and this is why I am getting the error. Is this normal with Media edition? I
know that only certain cards are Media Edition compatible but I assumed that
a Media Edition card would be compatible with third party software. Was I
wrong or do I have another problem? I have tried rebooting and attempting to
capture before starting Media Center and I still get the same results. If
Media Center is "capturing" the card, it is doing so when it boots. Anyone
here using Media Edition 2005 that is able to capture with other software? If
this is normal, can I get a non Media Center capture card and use it outside
of Media Center. I am highly frustrated with Media Center because of this
and numberous "Loss of Singal" errors. Sorry about the long post. Any help
greatly appreciated.

Samething here. I have NeroVision Express and it says "Capture device
already in use", even though it is not. The answer you will get is of
interest to me.

Same problem here! In fact, I posted something about this 8 posts prior to
yours today. My Arcsoft Showbiz DVD worked great capturing video "prior" to
upgrading to MC 2005.

After the upgrade, I receive the following message whenever I try to capture
from device: "The device is not available, or being used by another
application. Please close any applications that may be using the device". If
I disable the TV tuner in device manager, then Arcsoft works again?

I have posted this question elsewhere and also worked with HP Media Center
support to no avail. I too would be interested if knowing if any MS MVP's on
this site can help us troubleshoot what is causing this conflict in MC 2005?

How about it. Any MVPs out there willing to answer this question? I would
think it would be an easy one.

I'm not an MVP just a humble user:-) MCE services are holding on to the tuner
card & you need to stop these services. AFAIK if you open a Command Prompt and
type:

net stop ehrecvr

that should do it. Otherwise stop all the eh* processes in Task Manager.

On reflection it occurs to me that Sonic RecordNow does not do capturing at all
as it is merely a disk burning program. I don't think Arcsoft ShowBiz supports
video capture from the Emuzed card which does MPEG2 encoding in hardware.

My Sonic RecordNow (version 7.3) appears to have capture. It has a button
that says caputure and when I click it, and after the error appears, a new
window pops up with tools for capturing. I didn't realize that you need
software specific for hardware encoding cards. Do you know any names in
particular?

That's interesting. I have Sonic RecordNow Version 7.20 & there is no capture
option. There is only v7.2 on the Sonic web site. There are 3 packages for
RecordNow! a standard, a Deluxe & a Deluxe Suite. None of these packages claims
to have a capture facility. Are you sure that you are not confusing this
application with Sonic MyDVD? I got both in a package when I bought them.

There are various PVR packages that support HW encoding cards for capture e.g.
GBPVR, SageTV, BeyondTV. As you have an Emuzed card maybe their Movie Mill
application will work with your card.

Well, I guess you called it Nigel. I looked more closely and MYDVD starts
from within RecordNow when I click on "VideoDisk." All of this came on my
computer (Dell) and I didn't notice it was 2 different programs. I will
investigat the Move Mill software. I really would like to capture directly
to MPEG.

Thanks.
