to solve this follow these steps

1. Open task manager by right clicking the taskbar and click TASK MANAGER
2. find the EXPLORER.EXE in the list and click END PROCESS
3. your desktop will be closed
4. Click FILE * NEW TASK and type "regedit" without quotes
5. When regedit opens go to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\TrayNotify
folder.
6. Delete "IconStreams" and "PastIconsStream" entrys.
7. close regedit
8. Click FILE * NEW TASK and type "explorer" without quotes
9. items will be cleared.

tell me the result.

Appreciate the help Cankat, but I'm too chicken to fool with the regedit
file, so I chose to mark the duplicate icons as "always hide"
instead........thanks again!!!
