Can't connect Extender for Xbox using Linksys wireless Game |
|
|
Hello,
I cannot obtain wireless connection to Media Center Edition PC from the
Media Center Extender for Xbox.
I can connect them using ethernet wire with no problem and everything works
(but this is not what I need).
I have a new eMachines T6522.
The MCE PC is Connected via Ethernet wire to WRT54G Linksys Router (Firmware
V 4.00.7).
The Xbox is connected to WGA54G Game Adapter (can't find the firmware
version, but it is brand new).
These wireless products are "Certified" by Microsoft to work with the MCE,
except that the router has newer firmware.
The Game Adapter is sitting next to the Router, so interference should not
be an issue.
Linksys ran a couple tests and said the Game Adapter is working fine and
that the problem is with Media Center PC (which they cannot
support). Xbox Live support looked at the configuration settings (IP
addresses, security, etc.) and said it's set up appropriately and said it
must be the router or adaper.
I'm also able to connect to Xbox Live via the wireless Game Adapter
(although I don't have an account).
I've tried various things, including:
- disabling, then uninstalling all anti-virus products
- turning off the Windows Firewall
- rebooting everything numerous times
- With and without encryption (64, 128 WEP and WPA) - on both router and
adapter
- completely restoring the system, including OS, drivers, apps, etc.
- various IP settings on xbox
- removing the extender from the MCE Manager and "Computer Management /
Local users" and adding a new extender.
When I try to connect, there is some communication between the two devices.
After trying to connect, alternates between "Contacting.." and
"Connecting..." for a couple minutes, then the TV (extender) says "The Media
Center Extender Connot Connect to the Media Center PC"
The PC has a similar message, after initially indicated that it's
connecting. It also indicates that it has verified the setup key on the
extender when initially setting up.
Sometimes the MCE will make it through set-up and say "Media Center Extender
Setup is Finished", but the extender will slowly (minutes) load/display the
"Please Wait... downloading preferences" image screen that has the original
desktop background image ("eMachines" on top of grassy hill), then freeze,
then eventually says "Cannot connect..."
The extender and MCE PC are clearly communicating, but it seems they are
doing so extremely slowly (so they give up).
I still can't determine if the issue is with the adapter, the router, or MCE
PC software.
After several phone calls (to Microsoft, Linksys, and eMachines), I still
can't find anyone that seems to have good expertise with this configuraton
that knows what may be causing the issue. |

Go to Programs, Administrative Tools, Event View. Look in the Application event logs for any errors or warnings with the source listed as Media Center Extender Services. Check the event logs right after trying to connect so that you can be sure you're getting the most recent ones. Double click any errors/warnings and post back with the details.

If you directly connect your Xbox to the router via Ethernet (to eliminate
the wireless hop), does it work?
Also, it's worth noting that putting two wireless devices too close together
will actually decrease throughput vs. spacing them a few feet apart (though
if your equipment is that close, you may as well use Ethernet....)

Andrew,
First, move the wireless adapter away from the router. Too close can be as bad as too far away. If that doesn't work, try removing the XBox association in the Media Center Exteneder Manager, and deleting the MCX block from the XBox itself and recreating the association.
For the XBox:
Instructions for deleting the memory blocks on the Xbox:
1) Open the disc tray
2) From the Xbox dashboard, select Memory; click A to select the Xbox hard drive
3) Select MCX for Xbox from the list of game titles that appears and press A
4) Press A to delete the stored information for MCX for Xbox; select Yes and press A to confirm
5) Place the MCX game disc in the disc try and close the disc tray
For the PC:
1) Start, Programs, Accessories, Media Center, Media Center Extender Manager.
2) Double click the entry for the XBox Extender and click Remove.
Now go back to the XBox, but the DVD in and get to the screen with the 8 digit code. On the PC, in the Extender Manager go to File, Add New Extender and follow the steps.

Yes, when the Xbox is connected via Ethernet, everything works (can watch TV,
recorded video, etc.). This set-up is just temporary until I can get the
wireless connection to work -- I want/need to have the extender in a
different room where it can't reach my MCE via wire.
I have tried various distances.
Thanks, Andy

It sounds like you have a serious network throughput issue on wireless. The
fact that this works fine on wired does point to an issue either with the
wireless portion of the router or with your wireless bridge. To confirm,
try connecting a second PC to the wireless bridge, then copying a big (100
MB+) file between the this PC and your Media Center. Once you do that,
please post how big the file was and how long it took to copy.

Hi,
I think I have the same problem as Andrew. I have a LINKSYS WRT54G router
connected to MCE 2005 and a LINKSYS WGA54G XBOX Game adapter connected to my
XBOX. The XBOX works fine as an MCE extender in pure wired mode.
When I switch to using wireless mode it works fine when accessing XBOX
LIVE. I've tried WEP, WPA and NO security and XBOX LIve is fine in wireless
mode. However, the XBOX extender cannot seem to connect to the MCE host PC
no matter what I've tried. I start the XBOX Extender game CD and it
displays an 8-digit code to be presented to the PC setup software. I enter
that code when prompted by the PC extender setup CD and I get a message that
' setup was unable to connect to the extender'.
I've contacted LinkSys support. They assume everything from a
networking point of view is fine since XBOX LIVE works.
They had no entries regarding errors or restrictions in their problem
database relating to the XBOX Extender.
Is it possible that the extender software on the XBOX has network
dependencies or restrictions regarding LINKSYS game adapters?
Does anyone know if the Microsoft MN-740 wireless adapter supports the
XBOX Extender?
Thanks,

it doesn't support WPA. the best gaming adapter I've found so far is
the DLink DGL-3420. it does both a and g wireless.

Barb,
Thanks for the information regarding the lack of WPA support in the
MN-740. It turns out that you helped me solve my problem albeit via your
comments made in another post relating to a different newsgroup question.
You suggested to someone who had a problem similar to mine that they check
whether 'Remote Desktop' was being blocked by the Windows Firewall. I
checked my Firewall exception list and sure enough Remote Desktop was not in
the list. I added it to the list and I have full Xbox Extender
functionality. I also was happy to find that my Linksys game adapter
supported WPA Personel without any problems. I am using 802.1 'G' without
any perceptable performance issues even when watching live T.V. So I guess
I'm pretty happy.
Thanks again for your help.
