DCOM, RPC and InstallShield problems |
|
|
I just bought a Compaq Presario R4000 laptop with an Athlon 64 processor. It
came with XP Home but since I have a Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005
licence I installed it on the laptop also. Inmediately after installing MCE
I installed XP Service pack 2. After this I proceeded to install al the
drivers and here's where everything gets messed up.
The drivers couldn't install. They all gave me the following error:
The InstallShield Engine (iKernel.exe) could not be launched.
The RPC Server is unavailable.
The driver CD says it works on XP Home and XP Professional, so since MCE is
an XP pro I figured it wasn't really the drivers and focused on the RPC
Server.
I checked the RPC services in Control Panel > Services and they were
configured the same way as in my other XP pro box which works perfectly.
Still, I get the "RPC Server is unavailable" message all over the place. It
pops up every time I hit the dependencies tab on the properties page of a
service (services.msc) and also when I try to open Computer management >
Disk management.
After googling around for a while I read something about having to start the
DCOM service because InstallShield uses it for something through RPC to
resolve names or something, so I went back to Control Panel > Services and
there was DCOM, not started.
I figured this would be it, just start DCOM and voila, but guess what? DCOM
doesn't start. It gives me this error when I try to start it:
Could not start the DCOM Server Process Launcher service on Local Computer.
Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a
timely fashion.
So now I have no idea on how to start DCOM. Can anybody help me please?
PS: Internet Explorer is missing. Is this related in any way?

Several problems. First, MCE 2005 already contains SP 2. Second, your
laptop may not have MCE compatable hardware. Third, your MCE license is not
going to validate on your laptop.

To start your DCOM Server Process Launcher you should set its Startu
Type “Automatic” and restart your computer

I have exactly the same errors including internet explorer not working. This
a new pc (media centre compatable hardware) but still I get the same errors
and dcom will not start. Did you ever work out how to sort it out?

research on Google about using DCOMCFG (DCOM Config) to fix security
settings in DCOM.. usually this is the problem with DCOM not starting..
