Hello,
Just got a brand new Dell, and had an intel faxmodem.

Activated my Windows XP fax, and am able to send faxes fine.
For receiving faxes, some work and some don't. THe fax will pick up,
and say "receiving page 1 from...(company name here)" but after awhile
it may say "Error receiving fax". THen it stops! I don't get to see the
first page or anything.

When I disconnect my computer, my standalone panasonic fax receives the
fax just fine.

Then other times, I get faxes and receive and view them just fine. Is
there a fax setting or preference that I need to set, for the fax to
receive a wider variety of fax Classes??

Anyone else having this issue?

Unfortunately, Windows XP Fax has proven to be incompatible with many common
modems and drivers, particularly older ones, even if the manufacturers claim
they are "compatible" with Windows XP. Modem incompatibility is not apparent
during installation or the initial setup. It only becomes apparent when you
first try to send or receive a fax. The Fax Service will dial or will answer
an incoming fax but then fail with any of a number of unhelpful error
messages such as "Line is busy," "There is no answer," or "Reception error."
There will be nothing in Event Viewer to give a clue as to where the problem
might lie.

These errors have been nearly impossible to track down. To do so requires
enabling both PSS and debug logging of fax transmissions, both of which
require fairly extensive registry changes. For the time being, the best
advice is to attempt to use XP Fax only if you have a modem that is listed
on the Windows XP Hardware Compatibility List and using the latest drivers.

Well that sort of sucks!
I just bought these computers!
I believe the INtel modem is "designed for XP"
I'll try new drivers if there are any, but I suspect I'm already using
the latest ones!
Are there any other good fax software solutions out there?

"Designed for XP" is not necessarily the same as being on the Windows XP HCL
list. I'm sure there are plenty of other fax products out there, but they
are not within the purview of this newsgroup. I can send you logging
instructions if you want to try to troubleshoot your transmissions.

Thanks Russ...
I searched around and looks like you're the resident expert on the
topic...
In your experience is troubleshooting transmissions useful? e.g. can I
change something to get it to receive all faxes reliably?

Woiuld a third party fax software work better?

And do you have any recs on what kind of modem works reliably with XP?

Please do send me logging instructions! spam_me_to_hell at yahoo dot.
com will work fine for me.
Thanks!

Logging might give the developers a clue as to what the conflict is with
your modem. There is no way to know if a solution will be found. I would
guess that most third party fax software will be more tolerant of modems.
The Windows XP HCL list should contain a list of modems that will work.

Ok,
I found a great little fax program that seems to receive all my faxes
without errors!

http://www.rkssoftware.com/mightyfax/overview.html

Only $19.95!

I'm doing a 30 day free trial for now!
