I have been experimenting with RIS on a Windows 2003 Server. I have
succesfully installed the services, added the Flat OS installtion files for
Windows 2000, and XP Pro. I have also been able to boot a client and run
RIPREP to create a custom image on my RIS server. Just when I though the
hardest part of the process was over, I have reached a stopper. I cannot get
the image or the FLAT OS installations to come back to my test PCs. I am able
to boot to the PXE environment, login, and select my installation(Image).
After selecting my installtion type, I am met with the "erase all data"
warning. After going past that, I receive a message that I have an Invalid
computer name Error 00004E23. This happens no matter what installation type
I choose. What have I done wrong? DHCP is authorized and communications
and rights to the server look like they are working perfectly.

Hello RIS user,

I have EXACTLY the same problem. I don't think we are doing something wrong though. RIS is buggy. In addition to your scenario I've also changed the useraccount I use to logon to the RIS server (after pressing F12) in Active Directory to have the "log on as a batchjob" right. (This is done is GPO) I read somewhere this was necessary. But again, it still doesn't work.

Have you found a solution jet?

Any answer is appreciated.

Thanx,

Frits

i would suggest checking the naming convention your using when RISing. 00004e23 is typical error when trying to apply invalid characters to a machine name.

Are you using 'Automatic' or 'Custom'?

The solution for the issue you are experiencing is as follows:

Part 1 of 2: Obtain the GUID/UUID for your RIS Client machine

This can be found either in your BIOS information (accessed via BIOS configuration screen) or next to the MAC address when your PXE-complient adapter begins to boot.

Part 2 of 2: Activate the Machine in Active Directory

On the domain controller:
1. Click Start, then select Run.
2. Type DSA.MSC
3. Press ENTER.
4. Navigate through your directory tree to the Computers container.
5. Create a new Computer object with the name of the machine you want to use as the RIS Client.
6. Click Next
7. Check the This is a managed computer box.
8. Enter the GUID/UUID you obtained above.
9. Click Next
10. Use either Ant available remote installation server or customize the RIS server used to connect to.
11. Click Next, then click Finish.

Congratulations! Reboot your RIS Client and begin your deployment.
