Windows XP and Windows 98 networking issue |

I have both XP and Windows 98 computer. I want to hook up the Windows 98...
but they say I need Windows 98 SE and I don't have that. Anyone know what the
difference between 98 and 98 SE is? I have all the online updates for the 98
installed. Is that the stuff, that makes the 98 into Windows 98 SE?

My son is driving me nuts wanting to be online when I am, we have DSL and
it's stupid to pay for dial-up on the side. Any ideas? I just need the 2nd.
computer hooked up either hard wired or wireless... the cheapest way...
connection speed for the 2nd. not important, just able to connect to the net,
nothing fancy... Computers are in the same room.... side by side on their own
desks about 4 feet apart. Anyone have the same problem when setting up the
networking? I need ideas on how to get the second computer online without all
expenses of upgrading the computer to XP... losing all the programs like
Office... when doing that... not even sure the Windows 98 "Emachine
Computer" could handle that upgrade either. |

No, you do not need to upgrade the W98 PC to XP. And W98FE can network
just fine. You only need W98SE if you intend that PC to be the host

Windows 98 Second Edition has networking features and bug fixes that
aren't in the original version of Windows 98. Some (but by no means
all) network hardware requires SE and won't work with the original
version. In particular, many wireless network adapters require SE.
It isn't possible to get SE with online updates. You'd need a Windows
98 Second Edition CD for that.
If the 2nd computer has a working wired Ethernet adapter, you should
be able to use it to make a wired connection to a home broadband
router or an XP ICS host and get it on the Internet and the home
network, regardless of what anyone says. Try it and see.
Who are "they" that say that you need SE -- hardware vendors, software
vendors, ISPs, or others? What device or program or service do they
say requires SE?
Some currently available wired Ethernet adapters that work with
original Windows 98 are the D-Link DFE-530TX+ and Belkin F5D5000.
