I don't have any trouble browsing the web with IE 6 on a dial-up connection,
but when I try to connect to a server (not a web page) through an application
I'm told that I'm not connected to the Internet. I'm not using a proxy
server or a firewall.

Why can't the applications "see" the active Internet connection?

Thanks for the reply. I finally tracked the problem down to the
ZoneAlarm firewall, which I hadn't been using for the last couple of
months!
