When viewing across network, file owner is blank |
|
|
I'm trying to sync one computer (Desktop) with another (laptop). I went to
drag files from Desktop to Laptop and received the message I did not have
access. When browsing the desktop folder using My Network Places, some
files, especially the file that It looks like the failure was related to, I
see the file owner is blank. If I go to the desktop, the file owner looks
the same as the other files that sync just fine.
I'm stumped!
On a related note, some of the file owners are the guest account. How did
this happen? BTW, this does not apply to the file that it appears the error
was associated with...
All help appreciated. |

Since it is not quite clear about your situation, let me assume:
1. You were working at the laptop and dragging files from the desktop to the
laptop.
2. You browsed the My Network Place at the laptop to the desktop to find out
that the file owner is blank.
3. Since you see the owner's properties, "Simple File Sharing" is turned off
and that the laptop and desktop are using XP (Home or Pro).
All the above factors may have different reasons for your question. Please
provide more information.
I guess the basic reason is about NTFS Permission on files. Check that on
the laptop to see if there is something wrong about permission. It is obvious
with No. 2. If you don't have permission, you cannot read owner's properties.
The reason why Guest account being the owner of some files is that
1. When "Simple File Sharing" is turned on, everyone connected to a XP box
uses the Guest account.
2. When "Simple File Sharing" is turned off, when you connect to a XP box
without a valid account, Guest account will be used.
