In NIS there is a Home Networking Wizard, so you don't have to disable NIS.
Open NIS
Click on Personal Firewall then Configure
Click on Networking then click on Wizard.

For your Printer...(Do this with Computer that is connected to the Printer)
Start>run and type
control
Double click "Printers and Faxes"
right the printer and select sharing. (select the options you want.)

On the other computers (to install the shared printer)
start>run and type
control
Double click "Printers and Faxes"
in the left hand pane click "add printer"
then follow the wizard.

Good Luck
