I would not ask that in this newsgroup, nor this vaguely.
I mean: do you want the software to record your composition, or do you want
the software to compose for you?
Then "the best" may be dependent on your personal requirements: certain
features, ease of use, price.
Nowadays, most music sofware is (only) available from the websites of the
makers, so performing "advanced queries" on the WWW and Google Groups might
serve you best.
Note that document compatibility beyond mere MIDI-level hardly exists, so
collaboration might force you towards the same software your friends use.
You might want to start at no cost at http://www.anvilstudio.com/, then
eventually decide where you'd want to spend money.

Try N-Track Studio. You can use the Piano Roll feature, if that's what you're
after. It's also a full multi-track recorder. http://www.ntrack.com/
