Dan,
I don't see problems with your approach. In case of any possible conflict you can always resolve it manually.
Instead of messing up with PMQ you can copy/paste between component SLDs that you got by importing each PMQ.

I've had success with this in the past, but it does seem pretty dodgy?
Thoughts or better solutions? I'll have a think about the link you
