Hey,

Whenever I open my documents or other folders i get the folder view 'film
strip' I want to permantly change this to list view for all folders except
picture folders which i want as thumbnails. I have tried resetting defaults
and changing it but it keeps on going back to film strip. I have XP Home with
SP2 and limited computer knowlege but enough to do basic reg tweaks etc. Can
someone tell me how to set ALL my folders to list view then around 4 folders
and sub folders to thumbnail view permanatly

Anyone that can help will get a big smile =)

Thanks rob

The following is the correct procedure to follow.

Open "My Documents
From the menu bar, select | View | Select the "List" option
From the menu bar, select | Tools | Options |

This displayed window will have 4 tabs.
'General', 'View', 'File Types', and 'Offline Files'

You shouldn't need to use any of the "Restore Defaults" buttons.

The 'Restore defaults' button in the 'General' tab only affects the options
listed. Switch to the 'View' tab. The 'View' folder / tab has two "Restore
defaults" buttons which will reset all of the defaults in the options listed
in the 'View' folder / tab. Instead of the "Restore defaults" button, use the
"Apply to all folders" button.

Open "My Pictures" folder.

Manually change the View setting to "Filmstrip" for "My Pictures" folder.
Repeat this process for each folder contained in the "My Pictures" folder.

All of the changes you make should stay put. As an added precaution, close
all windows on your PC and shutdown the PC. Restart your PC.

Doing so should qualify your current settings as "Last good known
configuration". This should help to ensure your PC keeps your current
settings.

It's important to change your view settings in "My Documents" to "List"
first. Apply to all folders. Then change the "My Pictures" view settings to
"Filmstrip" and for each folder contained within the "My Pictures" folder
individually. Restarting your PC will help establish those settings.

If your PC should experience any technical problems when shutting down or
starting up, any settings you changed in your last PC session can be lost.
This is why it is a good idea to Restart your PC right after changing your
view settings. If you know your PC is already having technical problems when
shutting down or starting up, this could prevent any "View" settings from
becoming permanent.

If you do use the restore defaults buttons, the default view for all folders
is "Thumbnails". For the "My Pictures" folder, the default is also
"Thumbnails". For any sub-folders inside "My Pictures" folder, the default
is "Filmstrip".

Set a folder to list view and then use the "Apply to All Folders" option as Wayne suggested.

If you have a number of subfolders for your pictures, you can use my script to apply thumbnail view to all of them:
