I've got a folder full of bitmaps I want to convert into jpeg for space
reasons. I recall there's a method of converting file extensions en masse
through the command prompt, but I can't remember it. Help?

Get IRFANVIEW, a free download from www.irfanview.com
There is more than just changing the extension involved, the
bmp file needs to be re-coded by the jpeg algorithm.
IRFANVIEW has a batch file function.

You can't just change the file extensions to go
to .jpg from .bmp. You need to convert them
with an imaging program.

You can change the file extension from bmp to jpg by using the command REN
*.bmp *.jpg

The only trouble is it would not reduce the file size of the files. What you
need to do is to open the said files in an image editor and then saving them
as a jpeg from there.

Most good image editors can do batch processes, so you could batch changing
bmp's to jpg's
