Can I use Regedt from a working Wndows XP on my master drive to look at the
registry of a non-working XP on the slave hard drive installed on same
machine?
The non -bootable XP was in a Dell Dimension that one day would no longer
boot past mup.sys in safe mode. I reflashed the BIOS with their latest
version and that didn't help. I was able to run the Recovery Console three
times but it takes about 30 tries of loading Recovery Console to get it to
respond to the keyboard when it gets to the three options available. I
installed the whole drive in my other computer and can look at everything in
Windows Explorer. I'd like to look at the registry to see if the keyboard
and/or mouse key entries are disabled or corrupted. Thanks |

If the problem machine gets up to the logon panel then you
may be able to access its registry via a networked PC. Note
that the command is "regedit.exe", not "regedt.exe". |

You could load hives located in 'windows\system32\config'. the file
names would be "default", "SAM", "SECURITY", "SOFTWARE", and "USERDIFF".
Also there is "ntuser.dat" located in the "documents and
settings\<username>" directories.

I should be a little clearer on this, there a Load Hive under the File
menu option in the Registry Editor, so you can look at the registry
system and user files I listed above.

MS MVP Windows - Shell/User
The Load Hive option of file menu is dimmed until I click on either HKEY_Local Machine or current user. It seems to me that if I load hive then of the other registry on E drive, I would be mixing my good registry stuff with the bad one? or doesn't it work that way? The Import option is available but I'm not sure of the ramifications of that. I don't want to mess up my C drive registry. Thanks |

Yes, it is temporarily tied to your Registry, but as it is a separate hive, there is no issue. Just make sure that you unload the hive before you close Regedit.
