I recently had a problem with a corrupted .dll file and my system wouldn't
boot! I found a solution in Microsoft's Knowledge Base and it suggested that
I insert my XP disk and use the "Recovery Console" to replace the file, I
tried this but it asked me to type in my "Administrator Password", huh?
I've never used a password on my system, is there some default password? I
ended up having to reinstall XP to solve my problem.

Thanks!

One option is to assume the password is blank and hit enter. No there
is no default password. For XP Pro it prompts for one for the in built
administrator account at the time of installation. For XP Home it
doesn't so unless a password is set later, that one is usually blank.

"The password is not valid" error message appears when you log on to
Recovery Console in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=308402

If you are running XP Home, try leaving the password blank.

Hi,

By default, there is no password and simply hitting <enter> will log you on.
One would only exist if you created it. However, some systems that are
installed using sysprep have a known issue that blocks the user from logging
on, see:

Cannot Log On to Recovery Console After Running Sysprep [Q308402]
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=308402

The workaround is to use the boot floppy set, which loads a limited version
of the Recovery Console:

Using the WinXP Boot floppy set:

Thanks all! I did just hit enter without putting in a password and it took
me to the next step, but Microsoft's solution didn't fix my problem so I
assumed that it was because I didn't put in a password. Nice to know that I
don't need a password for the next time I have a problem, thanks again!!

The password being requested is that of the built-in
_Administrator_ account, not the password for any other administrative
user accounts that the computer's owner may have created. Unless the
owner deliberately set the Administrator's password via the Management
Console (_not_ the Control Panel), it's probably still blank. WinXP
Pro asks the installer to set the Administrator's password during
installation, but WinXP Home doesn't.
