We have 3 xp pro systems where the sp2 install fails no matter what we do.

We keep getting a very tiny error box with an oh-so-informative message that
says somthing like "Error - SP2 installation failed."

-Tried internet install, normal mode.
-Tried internet install, safe mode.
-Tried full 270 meg install, normal mode.
-Tried full 270 meg install, safe mode.

If it were one system, I'd just reformat, but three? We've cleaned all the
run keys, done full virus scans, adware, spyware, etc, etc...

Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks in advance,
JS

Hello JS,
Look at the svcpack.log file towards the end of the log file for error
messages.
There should be some indications in that file as to why it's failing
Thanks,

Hi Darrell,

Thanks for that!

I'm still investigating online, but in case you have any insight here's a
snip of the last few entries from the svcpack.log. I'm pressuming it's the

Note - upon a little googleing I found a MSKB article that discusses reg
keys with incorrect permissions. I will attempt that, but with all three
systems I tried both as Domain Admin and as local machine Admin. Wouldn't
both of those accounts have full permissions on all reg keys?

Hello JS,
Reg keys is what I am finding as well. However which regkeys is the
question, it always appears to be different ones.
Administrator(s) does not have full access to all keys. The admin accounts
could be removed(or access is denied to administrators) or it key could
require system only permissions.
So people have resolved this by using secedit and setting the system back
to system defaults.
Thanks,
Darrell Gorter[MSFT]

If you only want to reset the registry permissions, add this to the

Note - upon a little googleing I found a MSKB article that discusses reg
keys with incorrect permissions. I will attempt that, but with all three
systems I tried both as Domain Admin and as local machine Admin.
Wouldn't
both of those accounts have full permissions on all reg keys?

Hi Darrell,

Thanks for that!

I'm still investigating online, but in case you have any insight here's
a
snip of the last few entries from the svcpack.log. I'm pressuming it's
the
"353.048: DoInstallation: Failed to unregistering spuninst.exe for
recovery" part, but I have no idea what that is yet.

Thanks again,
JS

Hello JS,
Look at the svcpack.log file towards the end of the log file for
error
messages.
There should be some indications in that file as to why it's failing
Thanks,

We have 3 xp pro systems where the sp2 install fails no matter what
we
do.

We keep getting a very tiny error box with an oh-so-informative
message
that
says somthing like "Error - SP2 installation failed."

-Tried internet install, normal mode.
-Tried internet install, safe mode.
-Tried full 270 meg install, normal mode.
-Tried full 270 meg install, safe mode.

If it were one system, I'd just reformat, but three? We've cleaned
all
the
run keys, done full virus scans, adware, spyware, etc, etc...

Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks in advance,
JS
