Problem upgrading to Windows XP |

I bought Windows XP to install on a used computer I was given, but when I
tried to install it, I got an error message telling me that there is more
than one operating system installed on the computer. When the computer
starts up, there are 2 options, one for Windows ME and one for Windows 2000,
but the Windows 2000 doesn't work. If I try to go to Windows 2000 I get an
error message that the installation is incomplete. How do I get rid of the
Windows 2000 so that I can continue with the Windows XP installation?

In the Windows 98 installation, look for BOOT.INI in the root directory of the C: drive. This is a hidden, read-only file. You need to rename it to something else. Then, use a Windows 98 boot disk to boot the computer. At the A: prompt, enter
SYS C:
This will re-write the boot loader code, so that the computer will boot straight into Windows 98, without the boot screen. Reboot and let Win98 load normally. Now, you can fprmat the partition that Windows 2000 is installed on. If the Windows 2000 partition is NTFS, then you'll need to use FDISK from the Win 98 boot floppy to remove and recreate the Windows 2000 partition.
This all assumes that the 98 installation is on C: and the Windows 2000 installation is on a different drive, or partition.

I am in the middle of the "clean install" and my computer has stopped
responding. It is trying to format the partition but it has been stuck at 9%
for the last 20 minutes. Should I restart the computer or let it sit for
longer? If I restart, will I be able to begin the format process again?

Abort the install. Reboot your computer. Try the format again.

With second-hand computers, especially if acquired from strangers
but perhaps even if acquired from a family member, your wisest course
of action would probably be to format the hard drives and start fresh.
You don't want to get in trouble because the original owner may have
filled the hard drive with kiddie porn, or have problems because the
original owner downloaded/installed viruses or other malware.
Simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the
installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of boot
devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)
