Sharing Files on a home network |
|
|
Hi,
I have a small home network to share Internet & files between 2 pcs (using a
crossover cable). The Internet connection works fine but it can often take
time for me to locate the second computer & files thereon across the
network.
Can anyone suggest why this might be?
Thanks

The information on initialisation of shares was useful too.
Thanks both for your prompt replies.

What IP scheme are you using for the two computers, and are each
other's IP addresses in the hosts file? I've only ever done this
with a hub in the middle though..
Just an idea :-)
On XP pro it would be at C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
Not saying that that will fix it though :-)

%SYSTEMROOT% does not always equal C:\WINNT on XP pro machines.

On our XP boxes it is there, but yes it could be at C:\windows\.... instead |

When does this happen?
It could take up to a minute for the sharing resources to initialize after when
you log into Windows. |

What exactly is slow? Do you mean that My Network Places is slow to
open?
Try accessing the other computer directly by typing its name in the
Start | Run box in this format:
\\computer
