Utility Program for XP HOME |
|
|
Hi,
I think I've read almost every review avaialable and I still can't
decide which is the most reliable, least invasive computer cleanup
suite. So far, "Norton System Doctor", is winning, but before I
invest I should like to hear some ideas, experiences, etc, from others.
Thanks!
Mike

It's hard to make a recommendation, allot depends on what you
term Computer Cleanup. Norton System Doctor is a modified
9X/ME tool that I personally wouldn't allow near my PC. There
are lots of tools available - but most all maintenance can be done
for free or at a minimal cost. Just doing things like Chkdsk, Defrag
and purging caches & temp folders helps keep XP running along
fine. The web has many sites dedicated to maintaining XP and
a few generalized tips on how to improve/tweak performance.

The best "cleanup utility" is XP itself plus common sense and an
understanding of how it works, the rest of them are for the birds IMO.
Some are downright dangerous in inexperienced hands, lurk here a while
and read the tales of woe.

My advice is to avoid all of these. Besides most of these
programs being unnecessary, and in some cases downright
dangerous, I don't like the idea of "suites." I believe in
separately choosing the best program in each category that I
want, without regard to what (or even whether) suite it's in.

Avoid them all - they are a waste of money.

Just say no to all of them. Use the maintenance tools that already come with
XP.

Waste your money on none of them. There's very, very little that any
so-called "cleanup" utilities can do, that WinXP cannot do by itself.
Norton System Doctor, in particular, is a useless waste of hard drive space.

I don't like to buy a product/suite that claims to do everything. Eve
people have to specialize in one or two things but not all. Th
problem with those products is that they are always running and the
conflict with other applications causing problems and lots o
headache.
If you need a registry cleaner, just download a free one and run i
when needed but don't get one that runs all of the time.
It's also nice to do a disk cleanup and defrag on a regular basis.
Windows disk cleanup is pretty good and you don't need anything else.
The built-in defrag program is also pretty good but it just takes to
long to run. You can try a third party defrag program to see if yo
like it
