Links won't open in IE |
|
|
I am using Windows XP with IE 6.0 and all updates have been installed. Some
of the links won't open on some of the websites I go to. I've tried several
of the things suggested on this forum but nothing has worked. Can someone
please help me? Thank you. |

Since you haven't told us 1) any specific links or information about
what kind of links; 2) anything about what you've already tried, I can
only throw out a few general suggestions:
If the links you can't get to are secure sites, try re-registering
the .dll's. If you have SP2, you can do it all in one go:
Start>Run cmd [enter]
iexplore.exe /rereg [enter]
Without SP2:
Start>Run cmd [enter]
regsvr32 mshtml.dll [enter]
Click OK when you get the message that DLLRegisterServer in FileName
succeeded and type "exit" to quit cmd.
Repeat the same with:
regsvr32 mshtmled.dll
regsvr32 urlmon.dll
regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 wintrust.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
regsvr32 dssenh.dll
regsvr32 rsaenh.dll
regsvr32 gpkcsp.dll
regsvr32 sccbase.dll
regsvr32 slbcsp.dll
regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll

Re: Links won't open in IE |

Thank you so much for all your help.
One of the links I tried is the play online button at
https://zone.msn.com/en/bejeweled2/default.htm At first it did nothing but
after changing something (I don't know what as I've tried so many things) I
got an "error on page". When I clicked on the error button it said:
Line: 38
Char: 3
Error: Object doesn't support this property or method
Code: 0
URL: https://zone.msn.com/en/bejeweled2/default.htm
It will do the same on any game to play online but will download a game if I
click the download button. I also found this to be a problem at a mobile
home website when I clicked on the photo or floor plan buttons.
My computer says I have SP2 (in the "About Internet Explorer" and in my "add
& remove programs {no date installed}) but when I checked the Windows Update
history it said that the Windows Service Pack 2 "failed" to install in
November and it never showed since then that it succeeded in another attempt.
I wonder now because when I tried your first suggestion it gave me this
message:
'iexplore.exe' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file. I tried all of the other dll's and they all
succeeded.
I looked on the Microsoft website to see if I could download SP2 but
couldn't find a direct download. I would have to do it through automatic
updates which is where it failed in the first place. If I remove it would
automatic updates pick it up and reinstall it? I looked at all except one of
the websites you suggested (Sandi's Secure Sites Page didn't work) and didn't
find anything that I haven't already tried. I now have all of my settings
set at the default level.
As you can probably tell I'm not very computer savy...all I know is what
I've learned by playing around and trying different things. This is the
first time I've come across something I couldn't fix. I appreciate all your
help, patience and using computer language I can understand!!! :)

The Popcap games like Bejeweled require Java. Maybe you don't have Java
or yours is damaged. Look in Add/Remove Programs and if you have Java,
uninstall it. Then get the latest one here:
http://www.java.com/en/index.jsp
For the SP2 issue, look at the System applet in Control Panel. On the
General tab you will see your operating system and Service Pack level
listed. Does it say "Service Pack 2"?
If you do have SP2, that might explain some of the problems with
webpages that require the ability to open popup windows. SP2 adds a lot
more security to Windows and Internet Explorer, including popup
blocking.
If your computer is working well (except for not being able to get to
these websites), let's address the website issue before messing about
with SP2.

I checked the system and it does say "Service Pack 2". I also downloaded the
Java, restarted my computer and tried the game again. It still doesn't work.
Any more suggestions? I appreciate you helping me.

OK, I went to the link above and it opened a window and tried to
download and install something. It didn't tell me exactly what it was
downloading and installing, which is not nice. Now, of course this
won't work on my system since I am using Linux but I wanted to see what
was going on. Service Pack 2 has a lot more security features and
you've probably got popups blocked and didn't notice if there was an
information bar asking you to install something. Try adding the site to
your Trusted Sites in IE's Internet Options. I'll give you some more
links to help with managing add-ons, etc. in IE/SP2, but if that
doesn't work I think your best bet is to look on MSN's site for Help.
I'm sure they have information about using their site with XP SP2.
How to manage Internet Explorer add-ons in Windows XP Service Pack 2 -
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;883256
How to configure Internet Explorer automatic download prompts on your
Windows XP Service Pack 2-based computer
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;883255
And here is the main start page for Service Pack 2. Scroll down to the
bottom to "After You Install" to get links to help you manage the new
features:
