Standby Mode |
|
|
I want to know exactly what switches off during "standby mode" on Windows XP
Pro SP2. I seem to lose my internet connection (& hence can't download) when
in standby. I know this because downloads stop & my router's activity light
for my computer stops. Is this normal?
What settings are best if I want to save power & still download? My guess is
to just have the monitor & hdd turn off. Will the hdd not turn off whilst my
software is downloading (as this would be some form of activity)? |

Much depends on the power mode state your are achieving (you will find them
described here, near the bottom: http://rickrogers.org/standby.htm).
Apparently you are either using a near-hibernation state, or your nic
drivers will not run under the standby condition. Updating them may help.

If your hard drive turns off, where is the downloaded file going to be
stored - in your file cabinet?

Re: Standby Mode |

If you go into sleep mode S3 (standby), all activity stops. The computer is
effectively off. You can not choose between the various standby states. It
is determined by your M/B capabilities and your bios settings. Any device
that you have programmed to bring you out of standby will do so. If anything
is happening at the time you initiate standby, that must continue, standby
will not be allowed. Fortunately/unfortunately, the O/S assumes that you
know what you are doing when you initiate standby and usually makes it
happen.
It is up to you, the user, to do the right thing when needed. In other
words, if your computer is working - don't initiate standby!
