You're already in violation of the license agreement. So no, legally you
can't. And you're not supposed to have two boxes running with the same
product key and license. |

Ring Microsft and activate it on the final machine, if you need to
reactivate on the prior machine again it will prompt you to ring Microsoft,
it's an ongoing circle if you ask me.
MS is a law into themselves, it's not what they want but it's better than
pirating I suppose. So be a honest person and format the prior machine so
all is good for these newsgroup watches/posters.

I love how you lie!
What is the title of section 117?
"Limitations on exclusive rights: Computer programs"
Whose exclusive rights are being limited under section 117?
The copyright owners! Under the copyright law, they are the only ones
described as having exclusive right!
Stop lying Bruce, you only look totally foolish in the process!

You'll need to purchase a separate WinXP license for each computer
on which you install it.
Just as it has *always* been with *all* Microsoft operating
systems, it's necessary (to be in compliance with both the EULA and U.S.
copyright law http://www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/17/117.html), if not
technically) to purchase one WinXP license for each computer on which it
is installed. (Consult an attorney versed in copyright law to determine
final applicability in your locale.) The only way in which WinXP
licensing differs from that of earlier versions of Windows is that
Microsoft has finally added a copy protection and anti-theft mechanism,
Product Activation, to prevent (or at least make more difficult)
multiple installations using a single license.
One can buy additional licenses, assuming one already has a retail
license. Naturally, Microsoft cannot sell additional OEM licenses. Be
aware, however, that you'll probably pay more this way than you would if
you were to buy a second copy of WinXP from a discount retailer;
Microsoft will only offer you a 15% discount off their MSRP.
Additional Licenses for Windows XP Home Edition
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/howtobuy/addlic.asp
Additional Licenses for Windows XP Professional
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/howtobuy/addlic.asp
Assuming a retail license (OEM licenses are not transferable),
simply remove WinXP from the computer it is currently on and then
install it on the new computer. If it's been more than 120 days since
you last activated that specific Product Key, the you'll most likely be
able to activate via the Internet without problem. If it's been less,
you might have to make a 5 minute phone call.
Here are the facts pertaining to activation:

Since you can afford PRO and 3 pcs you can afford additional keys. Buy
them.

Re: activaton question |

JaXX,
Yes,
Call Microsoft PA, ask them to activate WinXP Pro for you. After giving them
your installation ID over the phone they'll ask you, have you installed and
activated this copy before? You'll say yes, countless times. They'll say
something like, why have you reinstalled this copy of WinXP? You'll say I've
got a new computer and dismantled my other one. They will activate it for
you. This method is best with a retail version.
Now to look at the case where you may have an OEM, same phone call but
you'll say something like, I've upgraded my graphics card, chip, got a more
RAM and bought a new USB 2.0 power cable, I decided to reinstall WinXP Pro
now its' asking me to activate within 30 days???? That's right play dumb but
be smart. They will activate it for you.
In terms of legalities as this thread gone down, Microsoft activated Windows
on the information given to them. They must consider it as true, you told
them that this copy has been installed before in all honesty, they assumed
it was the only install. See what I mean? JaXX there's not going to be
severe penalties, punishment,... Because they cannot. The onus of proof is
on them and the only thing you have to do in this very hypothetical
(hyperbole) scenario is create doubt in the judges mind. They know they'll
loose.
