Hi all,
I have a bunch of video clips, mainly .mpeg and .wmv format, but also a few
..avi. Each of them runs for about 10 to 20 seconds. What I want to do is
combine a few of them into one clip of around 2 minutes so I don't have to
click a new file every 10 seconds.

I got a piece of software called AsfTools 3.1 which came on a CD that was
inclosed with a local magazine. It is supposed to do what I want with wmv
files, except that it usually stops somewhere in the middle, aledging that
there is an error in my files. The few times it did complete the picture
quality was just awful.

A friend told me that I need MovieMaker. I visited the site and tried to
download the software and read a good portion of the last 5000 messages in
this group.
Problems are:
I don't have Windows XP installed
I couldn't find any way of downloading MovieMaker on its own. It always
takes me to a file which checks my software levels and gives me zillions of
updates to download. It also seems that I need to download SP2. That would
take roughly two and a half days at my linespeed.

So I'm wondering, whether MM is the solution, or rather, whether it's the
only tool which can do such a relatively simple job. It seems like cracking
a nut with a sledghammer.
Can anybody recommend a simple tool which allows me to combine several .wmv
..mpeg or avi files into one (I don't plan on mixing formats).

TIA
Peter

The Movie Maker only comes with XP. The version 1.0 also comes with Windows
Me. For XP SP1 machines there is a version 2.0 available for download from
www.download.com. Microsfot no more supplies it except with SP2 which comes
with MM2.1.

If you can contend with outputting in WMV format then you can use Windows
Media Encoder.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/9series/encoder/default.aspx

However if all you want is to "view" these clips without starting each of
them with doubleclick then this problem can be solved simply in WIndows
Media Player. In windows explorer select all the clips and drag drop ont
Windows Media Player playlist. (enable it from menu View->Now playing
options->Show Playlist). The order of these clips can be adjusted as you
like.
