Document folder appearing in my computer |
|
|
recently on an XP laptop with one user a folder named "Documents"
appeared in My Computer under the heading "files stored on This
Computer". looking at its properties it points to "C:\Documents and
Settings\All Users\Documents". it is set to read only and is not accessible.
it doesn't appear to be a shorcut but I think it is. is this a shortcut
that can be deleted? how did it appear in the first place? any ideas?
TIA

Make sure Windows Explorer is showing the full file name ( in case it is a link, it should show .LNK)
Bring up Windows Explorer / Tools / Folder Options/ select VIEW Tab and look at all of settings listed.
Un-check Hide extensions for known file types.

already unchecked
it is a folder not a file, please open My Computer and set the view to
details, it is under the first heading as described above right above
"User's Documents", it was not there before, and, given the folder in
question should not be there at all

This folder is used for shared documents, I have this on my Computer as
"Shared Documents" under "Files Stored on This Computer" and points to
the All User\Document location
To remove the "Shared Documents", start the Registry Editor (Start>Run
and type regedit)
Then navigate to the following subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MyComputer\NameSpace\
DelegateFolders\{59031a47-3f72-44a7-89c5-5595fe6b30ee}
Highlight {59031a47-3f72-44a7-89c5-5595fe6b30ee}and right-click to
delete.

I guess I now see what you're looking at. Looking at My Computer, my systems shows Shared Documents, and Maurice's Documents, the latter is where I store my docs.
I presume your login account has Administrator-level permissions.
You should be able to drill down using Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Documents and Settings, look under each user account, & under administrator, and see what each of My Documents folders contains.

Hi Marko,
Go to Start/Run/Regedit and verify this key and values:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ Explorer\My
Computer\NameSpace\DelegateFolders
Sub-key named {59031a47-3f72-44a7-89c5-5595fe6b30ee}. If this subkey is not
present, you will not have the group: Other files stored on this computer.
Other than that, if you are using TweakUI check your settings under - My
Computer/Files stored on this computer. And/or run the edit on line 56:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Added info:
To get an account's My Documents folder to appear in Windows Explorer (Files
stored on this computer), add/edit a key in the DocFolderPaths branch like
so:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DocFolderPaths]
"user"="C:\Documents and Settings\user\My Documents"
In the right pane, right click and choose New/String Value. Give it the
name of the user. Double click the name once added and type in:
C:\Documents and Settings\[User Name]\My Documents

I think I get it, why it is "documents" instead of "shared documents" as
on our other systems is the confusion. I guess since he isn't sharing
anything that's why its not accessible

basically, add to that a "documents" folder, it points to "C:\Documents |

been there, the User's documents folder is ok, the administrator's was |
never used so doesn't exist yet, and the aforementioned "C:\Documents
and Settings\All Users\Documents" is inaccessible
