My new gaming PC - what do you think? |

OK. Finally got everything ready to order.
Just have to choose below between the HDs and RAM.
SEAGATE
ST3160023AS (160G SATA150 7200) 10,600 yen Barracuda 7200.7 160GB SATA150

My rational on this setup is that I should be able to play any new game now
on high settings with no lag or trouble, at stock speeds. In the future, if I
encounter new games and lag, etc., I can just pop in a couple of Ballistix
RAM and OC the whole mess. Sound like a plan???
I'm not too worried about the rest:
As for the case- I'll try and pick up something with a 12cm fan front/back
and possibly a side fan, and a 400W PSU with over 18A/12V.
Keyboard/mouse- something ergonomic.
Monitor, I already have (22" CRT).
Please keep in mind I live in Japan, so availabily/price is a little
different than the states. Generaly, anything not on this site:

Hi,
If you live in the Tokyo area, I know you can find better prices in
Akihabara. A lot of the backstreet stores have better deals then Softmap,
LAOX, and T-Zone PC DIY. You just need to walk around and price check.
There are also a bunch of shops in the sidestreets that has some very nice
PC Cases as well.

will be PCIX graphics.

Hmmmm... I heard that AMD64 (939) PCI-X capable mobos aren't out yet, and
will be unstable for some time because that would be a conflict of interest
for AMD.

Hi,
I would wait still on any 64 bit PCI vid cards, let them get all the bugs
out of it first. I have seen some of the new MoBo's supporting the new
64bit PCI vid cards but haven't really researched into them yet. I have
seen them the last time I visited Akihabara and the prices varied from 9,000
yen on up, didn't look at any vid cards though.

I would go with a 256 MB PCI express video card (except you'll have to wait
for PCI express if you want a AMD cpu. I heard it will be out sometime in
the first quarter of 2005). I have Call to Duty and it runs perfect at the
highest settings with my video card and 1 Gig of ram.

Buy Maxtor hard drives only if you like replacing them every six months
or so. I've never seen one last longer, but others may have. Seagate's
OK, but I've also had good luck with IBM DeskStars.

I'd avoid generic or No-Name brand RAM. Bear in mind WinXP, like WinNT
and Win2K before it, is quite sensitive to borderline defective or
substandard hardware -- particularly motherboards, RAM and hard drives.
I've never heard of Transcend, so I can't judge it. I will say that I
have never had a problem with Crucial Technologies RAM. They offer RAM
specifically designed for your particular MSI motherboard for $133.99.
www.crucial.com (For those who don't know, Crucial Technologies is the
direct sales division of Micron Technologies. They use only Micron chips.)
