Hello,

I'm trying to update this program, but it keeps telling me that I don't
have IE 5 or higher. I have SP2 and IE
6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158!

Is there a fix for this?

I'm hesitant to suggest that you should uninstall the old version and then
install this correct version for XP SP2 compatibility:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/tools/mbsahome.mspx
because you're not supposed to have to do that!

Even in cases where the latest version of Internet Explorer is already
installed - which is a required component for MBSA - customers get an error
message stating that "Internet Explorer 5.01 or greater is not installed"



The MBSA team is currently investigating this issue. Meanwhile, the
workaround is to use the "quiet" install. To do this, download
mbsasetup.msi to a directory on your hard drive and use the following
command to install it:

msiexec /i c:\download location\mbsasetup.msi /q

This will silently install MBSA into %PROGRAM_FILES%\Microsoft Baseline
Security Analyzer\. You will then be able to run MBSA using Start ->
Programs -> Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer 1.2.

For a quicker solution you might try that other newsgroup I mentioned. But
my curiosity is piqued.

If you can copy the files and unzip them to their own directory folders then
you can use them, as they require no installation -- you just run them,
configure them, adjusting their filters so as not to clutter their logs with
"common background system noise", and then look for failures to show up in
the logs and to occur as you manually initiate a procedure that causes
failures. Looking for things like failing to find (or read or to write to) a
file, or failure to find (or write to) a registry key or value. These utils
might help define if your problem is related to a file (replace or register
it, or adjust permissions), or to the registry (edit it or adjust
permissions). They might even point to the exact cause of the problem and,
once identified, that cause can be compared against other systems and might
can then be fixed. They are debugging and diagnostic aid utilities that do
nothing more than create filtered logs, and the user account that is using
them must have full administrative permissions.

I guess my post of just a very few minutes ago will have to remain with
piqued curiosity, as your problem was solved in the fourm of expertise and
