For those interested I recently had some significant problems with
files saved as Microsoft MPEG4 V2 (4cc:MP42).
Moviemaker 2.1 and mediaplayer 10 both reported the problem as an
invalid file as did GSpot and AVICodec. After bashing around with the
files (basically trying to start a number of files and failing (I was
getting desperate) ) one finally worked....then they all worked.
Rebooted.....problem recurred......more bashing....files
work.....reboot....you get the story

In desperation I started to burn movies out as WMV....

I then uninstalled the latest divx pack (divx521xp2k)..........
........
.......
It all works fine now. MM2.1, MP10, AVICodec, GSpot.....all fine....

I'm still using movimaker to burn out as wmv just to be on the safe
side.

Happy now...
