XPe over PXE reboots after FBA |
|
|
I've setup an image using TD and the Windows Terminal template, and created
an SDI as directed using SDILoader and SDIMgr... SDI downloads fine and
launches to the FBA. FBA seems to run to completion based on logs in other
posts (Rewriting the system hives), but then immediatly reboots.
I have no way to run TA/TAP on the target hardware, nor to start up the
machine with WinPE (no floppy, no CD) (Is there a way to setup WinPE in an
SDI so I can run TAP on the target hardware ??)
Can someone explain why its rebooting and what I might be able to change in
the TD settings to prevent it ??
I am not using any custom drivers, everything is stock out of the XPe SP1
package |

Hi John,
If you want your PXE to work then you must pass FBA phase on HDD :-(
Then use that post FBA image and place it in SDI file.
For some of us TAP results are not required since we can make it work from a head by only knowing hardware platform. But at the end
you always need to pass FBA on target machine.
For start you can use Minlogon or Winlogon Macro templates from TD components. They will bring you generic hardware support requred
for your image to work. Just add ramdisk and pass FBA on any hardware platfrom that you an put HDD in. (It even does not have to be
similar to the taqrget one). Then make SDI image and do the remote boot.
Regards,
Slobodan

You have TA.exe for DOS.

The target machine is a badly damaged laptop -- no functional CD or Floppy
drive -- so cant even boot DOS on it
I've tried getting a bootable OS on the laptop HD but XP makes that
difficult.. will see what I can do about making an SDI that has already
passed FBA as that will be highly useful when it comes time to apply what
I'm learning to the systems at the office :)
Will get back when I've tried this out :)

Do you mean that FBA is starting?!?! Ah.. You have to use Resealed image
(FBA completed upto Phase 12000) for your SDI Image not the Pre FBA image.

John,
You can boot DOS on your laptop over PXE. It won't take much time of yours if you have a RIS server around.
Get the links to 3COM DOS image from here:

PS. Did we have some discussion about your broken laptop in this NG? Something is fleshing up in my memory.

Ya -- I was asking for a way to do WinPE over PXE a coupla weeks ago -- had
to break off to do other things and now back to working on XPe... got a
little further this time :)
New problem though !! Got a Winlogin setup booting from the laptop HD, but
there is nothing on the start menu even after I hand install shortcuts in
the administrator/startmenu folder... have also tried the All Users/Start
Menu folder.. no joy
also nothing if I put files or folders on the desktop
Standard Start Menu component does nothing that I can see either
Added task manager to the build, but right click on the task bar or
ctrl-alt-del wont bring it up
Any suggestions ??
KM -- running the XPe RBS.. no RIS servers at all, and since I've got XPe
booting now, will be going with making a sealed Winlogon SDI for inital
system setups

John,
Glad to here you are getting some progress there.
Please change the settings of "User Interface Core" component to tweak UI.
Btw, don't know what kind of image you are trying to build but if it is something close to XP Pro, take a lok at the XPProEmulation
project on www.xpefiles.com (Development Utilities/Main).

I got it all working enough to start an XPPro install on the machine -- its
running the SP2 update now :)
and I've created a resealed winlogon SDI that I'll test a little later for
working with other crippled hardware
