I enabled "Show Desktop Icons" in the UIF Core and can now put our specific
icons on the Desktop. The problem is that I can't figure out how to get rid
of the Recycle Bin icon. Anyone know a way to do this?

Doug,

Delete Recycle Bin namespace registred in registry. In other words, delete this key:
[HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace\{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}]

This registry is a part of "Shell Namespace Registry Data" component's resources so you may just disable it there.
