I had my pc from new with xp home installed.
I am now experiencing probs and may need to re-install.
I need to find the relevent prod key.
I have the prod id but microsoft say they cannot help as
xp was installed from new.

Any suggestions apart from trying to contact the manufacturer.

If Windows XP is still installed on the computer:

Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder v1.41
http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder.shtml

http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/repair_xp.htm
Near the bottom "View Product Key XP"
This will enable you to view the Product Key of the Windows installation which is
currently on your computer.

If you purchased WinXP retail, the Product Key is on an orange label on the back of
the package. If you don’t have the package, contact Microsoft:

How to Replace Lost, Broken, or Missing Microsoft Software or Hardware
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;326246

If you have an OEM version of WinXP, the Product Key sticker should have been placed
on the computer tower by the retailer. Note, Microsoft will be unable to assist you
with an OEM version.

If you got it new, there should be a sticker on on the case (usually on the
top if it's a tower) that serves as a certifiecate of authenticity and has
the key. If you don't have that sticker, you my have a less than legal copy.

As for the product key, you don't say whether the product is currently up
and running. I seem to remember a small utility that would get it, but I
can't seem to find it. Everest (the new incarnation of Aida16/32) from
http://www.lavalys.com/products/download.php?dlid=2&lang=en will get the
key, along with more than you ever wanted to know about your computer. But
the OS has to already be up and running.

Found it! Keyfinder at http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder.shtml . Has
an option to CHANGE the product key! That's scary. I may try it in one of
"Training" installs.

But seriously, Paul, unless there's a good reason for no OEM sticker you
probably have an illegal copy.
