I insatlled and ran (http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger and download the latest
version
of Stinger) and it did not detect any viruses. NAV detected 8 viruses and
cleaned them. I also ran NAV in Safe Mode and it cleaned some problems.
SpySweeper detected much spyware, but I am afraid we will need to purchase a
commercial spy app to completely fix this PC, but what if it does not work?
What if we spend $50 on Mcafee spysweeper or whatever it is they sell, and it
does not fix the problem, meaning I still cannot connect to the web? Would
they money justify the cause?

I have tried everything you can think of and nothing works. Disabled firewall,
called our ISP tech support,etc..
Yes I know we have Ghost and did not use it, when we should have to start
with. It's what we did at my old company whenever we had a problem like this.

Just popped in the floppy disk and rebooted, and then restored the PC from the
Ghost image on the CD. It was amazing! Perhaps when we first got this PC we
should have done likewise.

Or is there hope for this PC? The one thing that was not done was a
reinstallation of Windows XP.

Not necessary to purchase a commercial spyware cleaner. Nothing that I've
read thus far shows these work any better than the free versions. Start
with the free version of Ad Aware:
www.lavasoftusa.com

There is another such application, considerably more robust than Ad Aware,
Spybot Search and Destroy but unless you are an experienced user or this
problem still remains unresolved, I don't recommend using it. Because it is
more robust, you really need to understand the report it returns. Even with
its undo feature, depending upon what you delete, you might end up with a
system that won't allow you to boot to the desktop. It's a great utility
for those with experience, are well backed up and know what they are doing.
